CALDWELL COLLEGE HOSTS CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS WELCOME BACK BBQ FOR STUDENT-ATHLETES
9-12-08
CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell College Athletic Department and its
CHAMPS/Life Skills program hosted all student-athletes at the CHAMPS/Life
Skills Kick-Off Barbeque on Thursday, Sept. 11. The event featured Central
Atlantic Collegiate Conference Commissioner Dan Mara, who gave a
brief introduction on the purpose of the CHAMPS/Life Skills program.
"There will be a time when your playing careers will end," Mara said to
the student-athletes. "The CHAMPS/Life Skills program at Caldwell will
provide you with the tools to help you succeed in life once the games and
practices are over. The fact that Caldwell College is participating in the
CHAMPS/Life Skills program shows its commitment to its student-athletes and
their total development. I encourage all of you to take advantage of the
resources made available to you."
The CHAMPS/Life Skills program was created by the NCAA to
focus on the overall development
of the student-athlete in preparation for life after college and athletics.
This academic year marks the first year of implementation of the program at
Caldwell College, which was accepted into the program in the fall of 2007.
Approximately 160 student-athletes enjoyed a barbecue dinner held in the
courtyard outside the George R. Newman Center before being addressed by Mara
and Mark A. Corino, Caldwell's Executive Director of Athletics. The
event was organized by Athletics Administrator Megan Hrbek, who
serves as the CHAMPS/Life Skills coordinator at Caldwell.
"It is a great benefit to our student-athletes to have all of our support
programs under the umbrella of the CHAMPS/Life Skills program," Corino said.
"From the Academic Support Center to the Student Development Center to the
Athletic Department staff, we are committed to enhancing the student-athlete
experience beyond athletics."
