CALDWELL COLLEGE OBTAINS NCAA SPEAKER'S GRANT
10-8-08
CALDWELL, N.J.
- Caldwell College’s Executive Director of Athletics, Mark A.
Corino, has announced that the school has obtained a Speaker’s
Grant from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for
the purpose of a drug education-wellness program.
The program, which will be held on Monday, Oct. 20 at 12:00 p.m. and
7:30 p.m. in
the school’s Alumnae Theater, is entitled “Surviving the
Party,” a high-energy, fun and interactive program presented by Elaine
Pasqua, who is an NCAA-approved speaker. "Surviving the Party" focuses
on the effects of drugs and alcohol on decision-making skills and highlights
negative outcomes such as poor academic performance, property damage,
injuries, deaths and unprotected sex. Students learn to protect themselves
from becoming victims, and are challenged to confront their own behavior
choices. The dynamic and entertaining program encourages students to make
their goals a priority while still having fun, and to remain productive and
healthy.
“This is a topic of tremendous concern and one that
constantly needs focus,” Corino said. “If students are
informed of the risks and dangers, they at least will have an awareness of
what situations to avoid. This is the first time we've had Elaine Pasqua
speak to our student-athletes, and we are looking forward to hearing her
program.”
Caldwell’s Assistant Athletic Director and Senior Women’s
Administrator, Linda Cimino, along with Sandy Rock,
Caldwell’s Director of Substance Awareness Counseling, were
instrumental, along with Corino, in obtaining the grant. This year’s
program marks the sixth consecutive year the NCAA has awarded the
grant to Caldwell College, an NCAA Division II institution.
