CALDWELL COLLEGE RECEIVES NCAA SPEAKER'S GRANT
9-30-09
CALDWELL, N.J. – Caldwell College’s Executive Director of Athletics,
Mark A. Corino, has announced that the school has obtained a
Speaker’s Grant from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for
the purpose of a drug education-wellness program.
The program, which will be held on Monday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the
school’s Alumni Theatre, is entitled “Taming of the Brew” and will be
delivered by Gail Hand. Hand has gathered information on alcohol and
drug abuse on campus by interviewing hundreds of college students and
administrators over the past 10 years. Her program covers binge drinking,
drinking games, health risks, social pressures and other areas related to
substance abuse. She also provides positive responses to drinking issues,
such as accessing a sense of humor, helping a friend in need, and
considering counseling as an alternative to drugs and alcohol.
“Obviously, this is a topic of tremendous concern and one that constantly
needs focus,” Corino said. “Information is one of our most precious assets,
and the communication between our school’s administration and our
student-athletes is also crucial. This program addresses key issues and
offers alternatives and solutions that will benefit our student-athletes.”
Caldwell’s Assistant Athletic Director and Senior Women’s Administrator,
Linda Cimino, along with Sandy Rock, Caldwell’s Director of
Substance Awareness Counseling, were instrumental, along with Corino, in
obtaining the grant. This is the seventh consecutive year Caldwell College
has received the grant from the NCAA.
