FIVE COUGARS TO PLAY IN NJCBA ALL-STAR GAME

5-27-05
CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball team will be well-represented at the annual New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association All-Star Game to be played on Monday, May 30, at 1:00 p.m. at First Energy Park in Lakewood, N.J. Five Cougars who received NJCBA All-State honors, including Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Year Hasani Whitfield (Briarwood, NY/Molloy), will play for the Division II/III team against a squad of players from Division I institutions in New Jersey. Seniors Mike Kolesar (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) and Ryan McGee (Cedarhurst, NY/Lawrence), junior Nick Mauro (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) and freshman Eric Hines (Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) will also participate.

Whitfield, a two-time all-Northeast Region first team choice, led the Cougars in batting (.366), hits (56), doubles (14), home runs (six) and runs batted in (41). Mauro, who joined Whitfield on the NJCBA All-State first team, batted .354 with three homers and 34 RBI to earn all-CACC second team accolades.

Kolesar and McGee both made the All-State second team and were all-CACC first team selections. Kolesar, who saw action in eight positions during the season, turned in a .293 batting average while stealing a team-best 24 bases. As a pitcher, the right-hander went 4-5 with an earned run average of 5.09. McGee matched Whitfield for the team-lead with six homers while batting .338 with 33 RBI. The Cougars' second-baseman committed just six errors in 153 chances for a fielding percentage of .961.

Hines, a member of the NJCBA All-Rookie team, was named the CACC co-Newcomer of the Year after posting a record of 6-3 with an earned run average of 2.66 in his first collegiate season. He tossed four complete games and three shutouts in his seven starts.

The Cougars, coached by Chris Reardon, went 22-20 and finished third in the CACC standings with a 14-7 conference record. The 2005 season marked the third-straight year that Caldwell won at least 20 games.
