GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - For the second time in a
week, the Caldwell College baseball team dropped a one-run game to
Adelphi University, 8-7 Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game.
The Cougars, who lost to the Panthers 3-2 last Tuesday, fell to 8-11
on the season, while Adelphi improved to 8-11.
The Cougars trailed 5-0 and 6-1 before scoring three runs in the
seventh inning. After the Panthers tacked on two more runs in the
eighth, before Caldwell scored a run in its half of the eighth inning.
After senior lefthander Joe Catenacci (Helmetta, NJ/Brookdale
CC) struck out the side after allowing a leadoff single in the top of
the ninth, the Cougars staged a comeback in the bottom of the ninth.
Sophomore Andy Chunn (Lewe, DE/Cape Henlopen) and senior Hasani
Whitfield (Briarwood, NY/Molloy) walked, then advanced to second
and third on a groundout. After the next batter struck out, an error
allowed Chunn to score, with Whitfield advancing to third. Whitfield
came home on a balk to make the score 8-7 with a runner on second. But
the next Cougar batter flied out to left field, ending the comeback
and the game.
Senior Mike Kolesar (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) (pictured) went
2-for-4 at the plate with two runs batted in and a run scored, while Catenacci went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead Caldwell. Junior Derek
