FIVE COUGARS MAKE ALL-CACC SQUADS; WHITFIELD NAMED PLAYER OF THE YEAR

5-4-05
CALDWELL, N.J. - Senior outfielder Hasani Whitfield (Briarwood, NY/Molloy) was chosen the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Baseball Player of the Year by the league's nine head coaches, the conference announced. Also receiving a special award from the CACC was freshman right-hander Eric Hines (Milltown, NJ/Spotswood), who was selected co-Newcomer of the Year. Including Whitfield and Hines, a total of five Cougars were chosen to the all-CACC first and second teams.

Through 37 games, Whitfield, who was an all-CACC first team honoree last year, is batting .368 with six home runs, 11 doubles and 34 runs batted to rank first on the team in each category. He was named the CACC Player of the Week on Mar. 22, and he opened the season with at least one hit in 22 of the Cougars' first 24 games, including a 15-game hitting streak

Joining Whitfield on the first team are seniors Mike Kolesar (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) and Ryan McGee (Cedarhurst, NY/Lawrence), who are also repeat selections. Kolesar, who made the first team as a utility player, played every position except catcher for the Cougars this season. He leads the team in stolen bases with 23 while batting .291 with 17 RBI. On the mound, Kolesar is 3-4 with an earned run average of 3.35. This past week he was named the CACC and ECAC Pitcher of the Week after striking out 13 in an 11-1 victory over N.J.I.T. on Apr. 28. McGee, the Cougars' second-baseman, is batting .342 with six homers and 32 RBI. He has committed just six errors in 137 chances for a fielding percentage of .956.

Hines, who was named to the second team, led the CACC with three shutouts this season and pitched four complete games in six starts. He has a record of 6-2 with an ERA of 2.64 in 44 1/3 innings. Also on the second team is junior designated hitter Nick Mauro (Nutley, NJ/Nutley), who is in his first season at Caldwell after transferring from Fairleigh Dickinson in Teaneck, N.J. Mauro is batting .339 with three home runs, seven doubles and 32 RBI.

The Cougars (22-18, 14-7 CACC) begin play at the CACC Tournament on Thursday, May 5, when the third-seeded Cougars take on second-seeded Dominican College. The game begins at 11:00 a.m. at Wilson Field in New Castle, Del.
