BASEBALL FALLS TO DOMINICAN AT CACC TOURNAMENT
5-5-05
DC 7, CC 5
NEW CASTLE, Del. - The Caldwell College baseball team lost to
Dominican College, 7-5 in its opening game at the Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference Baseball Tournament Thursday afternoon at Wilson
Field. The defeat snapped the Cougars' seven-game winning streak and
dropped their overall record to 22-19. The Chargers improved to 23-19.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, when
sophomore Billy Ryan (Toms River, NJ/Manchester) scored from
third on a fielder's choice. Dominican then scored three runs in the
bottom of the third to take a two-run lead. The score remained 3-1
until the top of the seventh, when senior Joe Catenacci (Helmetta,
NJ/Spotswood) led off with a double, then scored on a single by senior
Hasani Whitfield (Briarwood, NY/Molloy). But the Cougars were
unable to get closer than 3-2, as the Chargers put four runs on the
board in the bottom of the seventh on three hits and two Caldwell
errors. Trailing 7-2, the Cougars staged a comeback in the ninth
inning. Senior Mike Kolesar (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) led
off with a double, then scored on Whitfield's double. Junior Landon
Viessy (Bayside, NY/Cardozo) singled home Whitfield, and junior
Nick Mauro (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) later plated senior Ryan McGee
(Cedarhurst, NY/Lawrence) with a single to make the score 7-5. But the
rally came up short, as the Chargers fanned the final batter to clinch
the win.
The Cougars lost despite pounding out 14 hits, leaving 12 runners on
base. Four errors also led to five unearned runs, as freshman Eric
Hines (Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) allowed eight hits in 6 1/3 innings
to take the loss.
The Cougars play N.J.I.T. in an elimination game on Friday, May 6, at
9:00 a.m.
