KOLESAR HELPS JERSEY PILOTS TO ACBL TITLE
8-26-04
Rising senior Mike Kolesar (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown
North) led the Jersey Pilots to the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball
League playoff crown in a 9-5 victory over the Stamford Robins August
10 at Krausche Field in North Plainville, N.J. Kolesar, a first team
All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference selection for Caldwell
College this past spring, pitched seven innings, allowing one run and
three hits in an emergency start for the Pilots, who turned to Kolesar
after using their regular starting pitchers to reach the championship
game.
Kolesar started 31 games in the outfield for the Pilots in the ACBL, a
summer league sanctioned by the NCAA. He hit .226 with 16 runs and 10
stolen bases. But before the title game, Kolesar had made only three
appearances on the mound, allowing six runs in five innings of work.
After giving up a triple and a run in the first inning, Kolesar didn't
allow a hit until the sixth inning. The Robins loaded the bases with
one out in the sixth inning, but Kolesar slammed the door with a
strikeout and a popup to end the inning.
This past spring, Kolesar led the CACC in both pitching victories
(nine) and stolen bases (45), an unusual combination that made him one
of the more versatile players in the country. He went 9-1 with an
earned-run average of 2.70 on the mound for Caldwell (28-16), which
captured the CACC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Division II
Northeast Regional in Smithfield, R.I. He also batted .374 with 39
runs, four homers and 18 runs batted in.
