BASEBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH N.J.I.T.

4-4-05
NJIT 4, CC 0
CC 3, NJIT 0
NEWARK, N.J. - Senior pitcher Mike Kolesar (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) hurled a two-hit shutout in the second game of a doubleheader to help the Caldwell College baseball team earn a split with N.J.I.T. Monday night at Riverfront Stadium. The Cougars, who lost the first game 4-0 before winning 3-0 behind Kolesar's gem, are now 8-10 overall and 3-2 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, while the Highlanders are 6-8, 4-2 CACC.

In the first game, N.J.I.T.'s Chris Legiadre (4-1) scattered six hits in seven innings of work to earn the shutout. The Cougars' best chance to score came in the second inning, when senior Ryan McGee (Cedarhurst, NY/Lawrence) (pictured) doubled, followed by a single from senior Hasani Whitfield (Briarwood, NY/Molloy). McGee was unable to score on Whitfield's hit, then was stranded when the Highlanders turned a double play to end the inning.

N.J.I.T. used four hits, an error and a wild pitch to score all four of its runs in the fourth inning. Phil Resciniti, Robert Forbes and Justin Racz knocked home runs for the Highlanders. Caldwell freshman Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville) dropped to 2-1 on the year after allowing eight hits, four runs (three earned) and three walks while striking out four in 4 2/3 innings.

In the second game, Kolesar took control, allowing singles in the first and fourth innings while striking out 11 en route to his first victory of the season. The Cougar offense broke through in the second inning, when back-to-back triples by senior Fadul Bambino (Astoria, NY/Queensborough CC) and sophomore Andy Chunn (Lewes, DE/Cape Henlopen) produced Caldwell's first run of the day. In the third inning, McGee doubled, then scored on Whitfield's single to left field. Whitfield then stole second and scored on a single by junior Nick Mauro (Nutley, NJ/FDU-Teaneck) to make the score 3-0.

Whitfield's two singles in the second game marked the 10th multi-hit game of the season. He also extended his hitting streak to 15 games, and has at least one hit in 17 of the Cougars' 18 games this season.

The Cougars return to action on Tuesday, Apr. 5, when they play at Adelphi University, starting at 3:30 p.m.
