WHITFIELD, MURPHY RECEIVE CACC WEEKLY HONORS
3-22-05
CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball team swept the
Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's first weekly awards of the
2005 season, as senior outfielder Hasani Whitfield (Briarwood,
NY/Molloy) and freshman pitcher Tommy Murphy (Monroe,
NY/Washingtonville) were named Player of the Week and Pitcher of the
Week, respectively. The Cougars went 3-2 last week and are 5-6 on the
season.
In five games last week, Whitfield batted .529 with two doubles, a
triple, two homers and seven runs batted in, while scoring eight runs.
He has at least one hit in 10 of the Cougars' 11 games this season,
and currently has an eight-game hitting streak. The 2004 first-team
All-CACC selection is leading the conference in home runs, runs
scored, RBIs and total bases, while his .436 batting average ranks
fifth.
In his first collegiate start, Murphy hurled a one-hit shutout in the
Cougars' 3-0 victory over Queens College this past Saturday, striking
out five and walking just two. For the week, Murphy turned in an
earned-run average of 1.80 in two appearances, allowing three hits in
10 innings with seven strikeouts. On the season, opposing hitters are
batting just .146 against Murphy, who leads the CACC in that category.
This week the Cougars are scheduled to play at Molloy College today
before hosting Bloomfield College on Wednesday at Smith Field.
Thursday's game against N.J.I.T. will be played at Riverfront Stadium
in Newark, N.J., with the first pitch at 7:30 p.m. |
