CALDWELL,
N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball team won both games of a
doubleheader on Sunday to take the three-game series with Wilmington
College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action this past
weekend. The Cougars, who lost 13-2 on Friday before winning 2-0 and
15-3 on Sunday, are now 15-17 overall and 9-6 in the CACC. The
Wildcats are 17-21 on the season, including a 13-8 conference mark.
In the first game of Sunday's doubleheader, freshman right-hander
Eric Hines (Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) had a no-hitter through 6 1/3
innings to lead the Cougars to a 2-0 victory. Senior Joe Catenacci
(Helmetta, NJ/Spotswood) led off the game with a double, then scored
on an error to give Caldwell a 1-0 lead. Catenacci scored again in the
third inning, giving Hines all the offensive support he would need.
Hines, who had six strikeouts, walked the first batter he faced, then
retired the next 19 batters until Pete Henyan singled in the top of
the seventh. The win was Hines' second shutout of the season and
improved his season record to 5-2.
In Sunday's second game, RBI singles by senior Fadul Bambino
(Astoria, NY/Queensborough CC) and junior Landon Viessy
(Bayside, NY/Cardozo) in the first and second innings, respectively,
put Caldwell ahead 2-0. Wilmington got on the board with a run in the
top of the third, then in the bottom of the fourth, sophomore Billy
Ryan (Toms River, NJ/Manchester) singled home a run to make it
3-1. After the Wildcats added another run in the top of the fifth, the
Cougars exploded for 10 runs on nine hits in the bottom of the fifth.
Senior Ryan McGee (Cedarhurst, NY/Lawrence) had four RBI in the inning
on a two-run homer and a two-run single, while Bambino had a pair of
singles. McGee finished the game with five RBI, while Bambino and
senior Hasani Whitfield (Briarwood, NY/Molloy) knocked in a
pair of runs each.
Junior Anthony DeRogatis (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South)
picked up the victory after tossing 2 1/13 innings of scoreless
relief.
The Cougars return to action on Monday, Apr. 25, when they host
Bloomfield College at Smith Field. The first pitch is scheduled for
3:30 p.m.
