BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - Senior designated hitter Landon Viessy
(Oakland Gardens, NY/Cardozo) hit three doubles and had two runs
batted in as the Caldwell College baseball team defeated C.W. Post,
9-6 in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon. The victory is the
first of the season for the Cougars (1-2), while the Pioneers fell to
1-11. The win also marks the 100th career victory for Caldwell head
coach Chris Reardon.
After three scoreless and hitless innings by both teams, Caldwell
struck first in the top of the fourth. Freshman Nick Longo
(Nutley, NJ/Nutley) led off with a single, then advanced to second
when senior Nick Mauro (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) was hit by a pitch.
Viessy then hit his first double, scoring both Longo and Mauro for a
2-0 Caldwell lead. The Pioneers answered in the bottom half of the
inning, scoring three runs, two unearned, on three hits off senior
righthander Derek York (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Twp.).
The score remained 3-2 in favor of C.W. Post until the top of the
sixth. Mauro again was hit by a pitch, then advanced to third on
Viessy's second double. Back-to-back two-out singles by sophomore
Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville) and junior Efrain
Velazquez (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) plated Mauro and Viessy to regain
the lead for Caldwell. Sophomore Chris Chiarappa (Elmont,
NY/Holy Trinity) knocked home Murphy with a single, then scored along
with Velazquez on an error to make the score 7-3.
After the Pioneers responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth,
the Cougars scored two insurance runs in the ninth inning. Mauro
doubled home Longo, then scored on Viessy's third double of the day.
York earned the win, allowing six hits and three earned runs in 5 1/3
innings. Freshman Stephen Pfeil (Hampstead, NH/Pinherton
Academy) pitched 3 2/3 innings in relief to earn his first collegiate
save. Offensively, Chiarappa and Velazquez each had a pair of hits for
the Cougars.
Reardon, who is in his sixth season as the Cougars' head coach, now
has a career record of 100-93. The 2003 Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference Coach of the Year, Reardon and the Cougars have won at
least 22 games in each of the past three seasons.
Next up for Caldwell is a non-conference game at Concordia College on
Wednesday, Mar. 15, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
