NYACK,
N.Y. - Sophomore Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville),
left, tossed a two-hit shutout in game one to spark the Caldwell
College baseball team to a sweep of a Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference doubleheader with Nyack College on Wednesday at Nyack High
School. The results give the Cougars an overall record of 13-14,
including a 6-5 mark in the conference, while the Warriors drop to
8-19-1, 4-11 CACC.
After four scoreless innings, the Cougars scored all nine of their
runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Sophomores Joe Hydro
(Flemington, NJ/Immaculata) and Rich Gili (Manorville,
NJ/Shoreham-Wading River) led off the fifth with back-to-back singles,
then freshman Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) was
hit by a pitch to load the bases. Junior Billy Ryan (Toms
River, NJ/Manchester) drove in Hydro with a sacrifice fly to right,
followed by a two-run single from senior Nick Mauro (Nutley,
NJ/Nutley). In the top of the sixth, Torres, Ryan, Mauro, junior
Efrain Velazquez (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) and sophomore Chris
Chiarappa (Elmont, NY/Holy Trinity) each had RBI singles, and
senior Landon Viessy (Oakland Gardens, NY/Cardozo) knocked home
a run with a double.
Murphy (4-1) was on cruise control for most of the day, allowing a
single and a walk in the third, a walk in the fifth and a single in
the sixth while striking out 13 batters. The Warriors put runners on
second and third with two out in the third, but Murphy ended the
threat with a strikeout. The is Murphy's first shutout of the season.
A three-run second inning was all the Cougars needed in the nightcap.
Sophomore Eric Theiss (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) plated
Velazquez with a single, then later scored on Hydro's RBI single.
Chiarappa eventually scored an unearned run to put the Cougars ahead
3-0. Caldwell added another run in the top of the sixth, when Hydro
scored on a groundout by Murphy. The Warriors scored their only run of
the day when a balk was called on Caldwell freshman pitcher Stephen
Pfeil (Hampstead, NH/Pinherton Academy) with the bases loaded.
However, Pfeil struck out the next batter and induced a groundout to
end the threat and the inning.
Pfeil (2-4) followed Murphy's masterpiece with one of his own, giving
up five hits and one run while striking out six and walking none in
seven innings. Hydro was 2 for 3 at the plate in the second game,
finishing with three hits two runs and an RBI for the day.
The Cougars host St. Thomas Aquinas in a non-conference doubleheader
on Thursday, Apr. 13. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at
Smith Field.
