CC 5, Phila. U. 1
PHILADELPHIA,
Pa. - Freshman pitcher Stephen Pfeil (Hampstead, NH/Pinherton
Academy) allowed just one run in 7 1/3 innings to earn his first
career victory as the Caldwell College baseball team downed
Philadelphia University, 5-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference game Friday afternoon at the Rams' Alumni Field. The win is
Caldwell's third straight and gives the Cougars a 2-1 mark in the CACC,
8-10 overall. The Rams drop to 4-18 on the season, including a
conference record of 1-5.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the third inning, when
senior Landon Viessy (Oakland Gardens, NY/Cardozo) singled home
sophomore Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville) to put the
Cougars ahead 1-0. The Rams tied the score in the bottom of the fifth
on Mario Zappichi's RBI single, only to have Caldwell regain the lead
in the top of the sixth. Viessy led off the inning with a single,
advanced to second on a groundout, then scored on a single by senior
Nick Mauro (Nutley, NJ/Nutley).
Pfeil (1-3) protected the lead by retiring seven of the next nine
Rams' batters before giving way to Murphy, who began the game in left
field. Murphy sat down five of the six Rams he faced to pick up his
second save of the season. The Cougars added three runs in the top of
the ninth. With two out, Murphy doubled, then scored on a single by
sophomore Rich Gili (Manorville, NY/Shoreham-Wading River).
Gili and junior Billy Ryan (Toms River, NJ/Manchester)
eventually scored on an error to make the score 5-1.
Viessy ended up going 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI, while Gili,
Murphy and junior Efrain Velazquez (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.),
pictured, each had two hits.
The Cougars and Rams play a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 1 at Smith
Field in Parsippany, N.J. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
