NEW
CASTLE, Del. - The Caldwell College baseball team dropped a pair of
Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games at Wilmington College,
3-0 and 13-3, Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field. The sweep gives the
Wildcats a 17-13 overall record and a 9-2 mark in the CACC, while the
Cougars fall to 9-14, 3-5 CACC.
In the first game, Wilmington scored all the runs they would need in
the second and third innings. Mike Mundy had a two-run single in the
bottom of the second, followed by Garry Wright's RBI single in the
third to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead. Wilmington's Bret Urban
scattered four hits while striking out seven to earn the complete-game
shutout. Senior Derek York (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Twp.) went
the distance for Caldwell, allowing seven hits and two earned runs in
six innings of work to drop to 2-2 on the season.
There was no pitcher's dual in the second game, thanks to an eight-run
first inning for Wilmington. The Wildcats who had five hits in the
inning, also benefited from five Caldwell errors as seven of the runs
were unearned. Wilmington later scored two runs in the second, two in
the fourth and another in the fifth. The Cougars knocked home their
first runs of the day in the third inning, when sophomore Eric
Theiss (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park), pictured, hit a two-run double
that scored freshman Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella)
and sophomore Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville), who
each singled. Theiss again doubled home Torres in the fifth for the
Cougars' third run. Theiss went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and two
doubles to lead Caldwell offensively. Matt Gianni was 2 for 4 with
three RBIs and Brian Testa went 3 for 4 with two RBIs for the
Wildcats.
The Cougars are back in action on Monday, Apr. 10, when they play a
CACC contest at Felician College at 3:00 p.m.
