7-12-07
CALDWELL, N.J. - Four Caldwell College baseball players have been
chosen to play in the Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate League
All-Star Game, which will take place this afternoon at Lakewood Blue
Claws Stadium in Lakewood, N.J. Rising senior pitcher Mark
Wettengel (Toms River, NJ/Ocean CC), junior pitcher Eric
Hines (Milltown, NJ/Spotswood), sophomore outfielder Adric
Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC) and infielder Billy Ryan
(Toms River, NJ/Manchester), who was a senior this past spring, are
among the 50 athletes from the league's eight teams to participate
in the All-Star Game, which will begin at 5:30 p.m.
The four players are members of the Manchester Yankees, who lead the
ABCCL with a 17-7 record. Saxon, the 2007 Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Year, is batting .383 with two
home runs and 13 runs batted in through 16 games. Ryan, who was
named to the all-CACC first team this past spring, has a .351
batting average with 18 RBI. Hines leads the ABCCL with a perfect
5-0 record. A second team all-CACC choice, Hines boasts an earned
run average of 1.41 with 20 strikeouts in 32 innings pitched.
Wettengel has had a strong summer after seeing limited action for
the Cougars due to injury. He is 2-2 with 27 strikeouts in 28 2/3
innings for the Yankees.
Other Cougars participating in the ABCCL include rising junior
outfielder Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella), who
also plays for the Manchester Yankees, junior pitcher Stephen
Pfeil (Hampstead, NH/Pinherton Academy) and sophomore outfielder
Raymond Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional). Pfeil and
Keelan play for the Ocean Giants.
The ABCCL is a competitive collegiate summer
league consisting of eight teams throughout New Jersey. The ABCCL
All-Star Game participants were selected by the league's
coaches not only for their superior baseball skills, but for their
team contributions, sportsmanship and character. An Invitational
Pro-Scout Showcase conducted by the Major League Scouting Bureau
will precede the All-Star Game.
