CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball team will be the No. 1 seed in the 2007 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament by virtue of its first-place finish in the regular-season standings. The Cougars, who are 22-11 on the season and 11-5 in CACC play, will face fourth-seeded Dominican College in the tourney's first round on Thursday, May 10 at 3:00 p.m. in New Castle, Del.

Thursday's games will be played at Wilson Field in New Castle, Del., with the remainder of the tournament being held at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, Del.

This is the second CACC regular-season crown in the seven-year tenure of head coach Chris Reardon, who was named the CACC Coach of the Year yesterday. The Cougars are led by senior third-baseman Billy Ryan (Toms River, NJ/Manchester), junior catcher Chris Chiarappa (Elmont, NY/Holy Trinity) and freshman outfielder Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC), all of whom were named to the all-CACC first team. Along with freshman outfielders Raymond Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) and Omar Velazquez (Astoria, NY/Long Island City), the Cougars have one of the most potent offenses in the nation, ranking 11th in runs per game (8.8), sixth in home runs per game (1.36) and ninth in doubles per game (2.39) in Division II.

On the mound, freshman Robert Casal (Howard Beach, NY/St. Francis Prep), also a first team all-CACC selection, posted an 8-1 record with a 3.84 earned run average in his first collegiate season. Sophomores Eric Hines (Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) and Stephen Pfeil (Hampstead, NH/Pinherton Academy) both won five games apiece and recorded identical 4.50 ERAs.

Fourth-place Dominican (18-17), the defending CACC Tournament champions, finished with a record of 9-7 in conference play, The Cougars won all three meetings with the Chargers this season, including an 8-7 decision on May 1 at Smith Field. The other participants in the tournament include second-seeded Wilmington College (26-18) and third-seeded Felician College (28-23), which play each other in Thursday's first game at 12:00 p.m.

The winner of the CACC Tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Northeast Region Tournament, to be held May 17-21.
