CASAL NAMED TO ECAC DIVISION II BASEBALL ALL-STAR TEAM
7-26-07
CALDWELL,
N.J. - Caldwell College pitcher Robert Casal (Howard Beach,
NY/St. Francis Prep) was selected to the ECAC Division II Baseball
All-Star Team for the 2007 season, the organization announced today.
Casal, who was 10-1 with an earned run average of 3.74 as a
freshman, was one of only two pitchers to be named to the All-Star
Team, which is selected by the coaches at ECAC Division II member
institutions.
During his first collegiate season, Casal led Caldwell in victories, earned run average, innings pitched (74 2/3) and strikeouts (75).
He ranked 14th in victories and 48th in strikeouts per nine innings
among all NCAA Division II pitchers. In his only
start at the Northeast Region Tournament, Casal struck out 10
batters while allowing seven hits and four runs in 8 1/3 innings
pitched in the win against UMass-Lowell. He also had 10 strikeouts
in an 11-4 win over Felician College at the CACC Tournament on May
11. A first team all-CACC selection, Casal also earned all-Northeast
Region second team honors from the American Baseball Coaches
Association/Rawlings, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers
Association and Daktronics.
Casal helped the Cougars, coached by Chris Reardon, win the
CACC regular-season title and advance to the NCAA Division II
Northeast Region Tournament for the second time in four years. This
summer, Casal is playing for the Metro New York Cadets in the
Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League, a NCAA-sanctioned summer league
partially funded by Major League Baseball.
The ECAC's membership includes 320 colleges and universities from
Maine to Georgia and westerly to Illinois. Since Caldwell College
joined the ECAC in 2004, Caldwell student-athletes have received
weekly and year-end honors from the ECAC, and the men's and women's
soccer teams and men's basketball team have competed in ECAC
championship tournaments.
