CALDWELL RECEIVES AT-LARGE BID TO NCAA BASEBALL REGIONAL
5-14-07
CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball team has been
selected to participate in the NCAA Division II Northeast Region
Tournament, which begins Thursday, May 17 in Rindge, N.H. This is
the second appearance in the NCAA Regional for Caldwell, which
played in the 2004 Northeast Region Tournament after winning the
Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament that year. The
Cougars (24-13) are the fourth seed in the tournament and will play
third-seeded UMass-Lowell in the first round on Thursday at 6:00
p.m.
Caldwell, coached by Chris Reardon, are led offensively by
senior Billy Ryan (Toms River, NJ/Manchester), junior
Chris Chiarappa (Elmont, NY/Holy Trinity) and freshman Adric
Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC). The three players were
named to the all-CACC first team while helping the Cougars rank
among the national leaders in runs scored per game and home runs per
game. Freshman pitcher Robert Casal (Howard Beach, NY/St.
Francis Prep), also a first team all-CACC selection, paced the
pitching staff with a 9-1 record, an earned run average of 3.66 and
65 strikeouts in 66 1/3 innings.
Reardon, who was named the CACC Coach of the Year last week, guided
the Cougars to an 11-5 record in the conference to clinch the
program's second CACC regular-season crown during his seven-year
tenure.
Host
Franklin Pierce College (45-9) is the top seed, followed by
second-seeded Adelphi University (34-15), fifth-seeded Bryant
University (32-22) and sixth-seeded Wilmington College (29-18),
which defeated the Cougars in the CACC Tournament final on Saturday,
