5-19-07
CALDWELL,
N.J. - Five Caldwell College baseball players were named All-State
by the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association, the organization
announced. Freshman outfielder
Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC) and freshman pitcher
Robert Casal (Howard Beach, NY/St. Francis Prep) were included on
the first team, junior catcher Chris Chiarappa (Elmont,
NY/Holy Trinity) made the second team, and senior third-baseman Billy Ryan
(Toms River, NJ/Manchester) and freshman outfielder Raymond
Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) were on the third team.
Saxon led Caldwell with 13 home runs and 62 runs batted in while
hitting .365. He
currently leads the nation in RBIs per game and ranks eighth in
homers per game to help the Cougars rank 11th nationally in scoring.
Casal was the Cougars' top starting pitcher, going 10-1 with an
earned run average of 3.74. In his first collegiate season, he led
the team in victories, ERA, strikeouts (75) and innings pitched (74
2/3). Both Casal and Saxon were first team all-Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference selections and also made the Daktronics and
ABCA/Rawlings all-Northeast Region teams.
Chiarappa had his best season as a Cougar, batting .368 with 13
doubles, four home runs and 29 RBIs. Also a first team all-CACC
choice, Chiarappa earned a spot on the all-tournament team at the
NCAA Division II Northeast Region Tournament this past weekend.
Ryan ranked fifth on the team with a .331 batting average while
recording 29 RBIs and hitting eight doubles and five homers on the
year to earn all-CACC first team honors. A four-year starter at
third base, he finished his career at Caldwell with 169 hits in 165
games. Keelan led the Cougars in hitting with a .385 average while
ranking second in home runs (seven) and RBIs (38). One of three
freshmen to start every game this season, Keelan made the all-CACC
second team.
The Cougars, coached by Chris Reardon, finished 25-15 this
season and captured the CACC regular-season title while making their
second appearance in the NCAA Division II Northeast Region
Tournament in four years.
