N.Y. - Sophomore right-hander Stephen Pfeil (Hampstead, NH/Pinherton
Academy), left, pitched a complete game and sophomore Jorge Torres
(Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) hit two home runs as the Caldwell
College baseball team defeated Nyack College 6-1 in a Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference game Thursday night at Nyack High School. The
victory completes the season sweep of the Warriors and gives the
Cougars a 16-6 overall record, including an 8-1 mark in the
conference. Nyack drops to 6-25, 4-6 CACC.
Caldwell started the scoring in the top of the third inning, when
freshman Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC) blasted a
two-run home run, his team-leading eighth of the year, for a 2-0 lead.
The score remained 2-0 until the top of the sixth, when freshman
Jon Irwin (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) and junior Tommy Murphy
(Monroe, NY/Washingtonville) each drove in a run to put the Cougars up
4-0. After Nyack scored a run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI
single by Billy Gleason, Torres hit a solo home run in the top of the
seventh to make the score 5-1 Caldwell. In his next at-bat, Torres
homered again in the top of the ninth for his fourth of the season.
The Cougars, who lead the nation in scoring at 9.6 runs per game, now
have hit 30 home runs in 22 games this season.
Pfeil worked all nine innings and allowed seven hits, one run and one
walk while striking out six to improve to 4-2 on the year. Murphy, who
had two doubles, and freshman Raymond Keelan (Barnegat,
NJ/Southern Regional) joined Torres as Cougars who had two hits in the
game. Phil Messerian pitched six innings and took the loss for Nyack.
Caldwell, ranked seventh in the latest Northeast Region Poll conducted
by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, host
fourth-ranked Adelphi University in a non-conference game on Friday,
Apr. 20. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. at Smith Field.
