LYNDHURST, N.J . - A five-run seventh inning propelled the Caldwell
College baseball team to a 14-6 victory over Felician College in a
Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Tuesday afternoon at
Breslin Field. The Cougars, who struck for 18 hits in the win,
improved to 10-6 overall, including a 2-1 mark in the conference,
while the Golden Falcons fell to 11-16, 1-3 CACC.
Caldwell scored on a double by freshman Jon Irwin (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac)
in the top of the second and tallied an unearned run in the top of the
third, but trailed 4-2 heading into the seventh inning. Freshman
Omar Velazquez (Astoria, NY/Long Island City), left, led off the inning
with a single, then scored on a single from junior Tommy Murphy
(Monroe, NY/Washingtonville) to make the score 4-3 Felician. The
Cougars tied the game with a run on a wild pitch before freshman
Raymond Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) singled home a
pair of runs to put Caldwell up 6-3. Junior Chris Chiarappa
(Elmont, NY/Holy Trinity) capped off the inning with a single that
plated Keelan for a 7-3 lead.
The Golden Falcons scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh,
including two on a triple by Vinnie DiBenedetti, to pull to within
one, 7-6. But the Caldwell bats stayed hot, as senior Billy Ryan
(Toms River, NJ/Manchester) belted a two-out, three-run home run to
left in the top of the eighth for a 10-6 advantage. Run-scoring
singles by freshman Andrew Robertson (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella)
and sophomore Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella), and a
two-run double by Murphy in the top of the ninth completed the
scoring. The offensive outburst marked the sixth time this season that
the Cougars have scored at least 10 runs in a game.
All 10 Cougars with an at-bat had a hit, with Keelan leading the way
with three singles. Ryan, Velazquez, Murphy, Torres, Chiarappa and
freshman Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) each had two
hits. On the mound, freshman Robert Casal (Howard Beach, NY/St.
Francis Prep) allowed seven hits and four earned runs while striking
out five and walking one to improve to 4-1.
The Cougars return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 4 for a non-conference
game with C.W. Post, beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Smith Field.
