HARROGATE, Tenn. - A 10-run second inning carried the Caldwell College
baseball team to a 15-2 victory over Lincoln Memorial University at
Hennon Field Sunday afternoon. The win marked the first game of seven
against Tennessee colleges in six days for the Cougars, who improve to
5-2 on the season. The loss drops the Railsplitters to 21-11 and ends
a five-game winning streak.
After junior Chris Chiarappa (Elmont, NY/Holy Trinity) drove in
a run with a sacrifice fly in the first, the Cougars exploded for 10
runs and nine hits in the top of the second. Freshman Raymon Keelan
(Barnegat, NH/Southern Regional) had a pair of RBIs in the inning,
while senior Billy Ryan (Toms River, NJ/Manchester), junior
Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville) and freshmen Jon
Irwin (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac), Adric Saxon (Coral Springs,
FL/Broward CC) and Doug Hilgenberg (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon
Central) each drove in runs.
Saxon's three-run home run sparked a four-run inning in the top of the
sixth to make the score 15-2. When the Railsplitters failed to reduce
the deficit to eight runs by the end of the seventh, the game was
called. Saxon finished the game 3 for 4 with two runs and four RBIs,
while freshman Omar Velazquez (Astoria, NY/Long Island City)
went 4 for 5 with three runs and Keelan had three hits and three RBIs
to pace the Cougar offense.
Freshman Robert Casal (Howard Beach, NY/St. Francis Prep) went
the distance on the mound for Caldwell, allowing nine hits and two
runs in seven innings to improve to 2-0.
The Cougars continue their Tennessee trip with a game at Tusculum
University in Greeneville, Tenn., beginning at 4:00 p.m.
