VELAZQUEZ SELECTED CACC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

N.J. - Caldwell College freshman Omar Velazquez (Astoria, NY/Long
Island City) was named the baseball Rookie of the
Week by the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference for the week ending
Apr. 29, the league announced today. Velazquez becomes the fourth
Cougar to be named the conference's Rookie of the Week this season,
joining freshmen Robert Casal (Howard Beach, NY/St. Francis
Prep), Raymond Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) and
Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC).
Velazquez was a dual threat for the Cougars last week, hitting .296
with a home run, five RBIs and seven runs while going 2-0 with an
earned run average of 4.09 in his first two collegiate starts on the
mound. In a 13-7 win over Felician College on Apr. 23, Velazquez
went 2 for 3 with a double and three runs. He also held the Golden
Falcons to four runs (two earned) and six hits in four innings to
earn his first career victory. In the Cougars' 11-4 win over
Dominican on Apr. 29, Velazquez pitched seven innings and game up
three runs on seven hits while striking out eight. He also had a
pair of hits and two runs at the plate. Velazquez's three-run home
run helped Caldwell top Philadelphia 9-7 on Apr. 28.
Velazquez and the Cougars return to action on Tuesday, May 1, when
they host Dominican at 2:00 p.m. at Smith Field.
