GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - The Caldwell College baseball team completed
its trip through Tennessee with an 11-2 loss to Tusculum College
Thursday afternoon at Pioneer Park. The Cougars (7-5) leave
Tennessee with a 3-3 record against Tusculum, Carson-Newman College
and Lincoln Memorial University, including an 0-2 mark against the
29th-ranked Pioneers, who improve to 26-10 on the season.
Caldwell opened the scoring in the top of the first, when junior
Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville) came home on a
Tusculum error. After the Pioneers tied the game in the bottom of
the first on a pair of triples, Murphy singled home freshman Jon
Irwin (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) in the top of the second to put the
Cougars back on top 2-1. But that is the last lead Caldwell would
hold, as Tusculum proceeded to score 10 runs over the next four
innings. Six of the runs were unearned, with the Cougars committing
five errors during that stretch.
Freshman Robert Casal (Howard Beach, NY/St. Francis Prep)
took the loss and dropped to 2-1 on the season, while Pioneers'
pitcher Boo Morrow (2-0) held the Cougars to just four hits in six
innings.
Caldwell's next scheduled game, a non-conference doubleheader at St.
Rose, has been canceled. The Cougars are scheduled to open their
home slate on Wednesday, Mar. 28 against Nyack College at Smith
Field. The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
