COUGAR BASEBALL RANKED FIFTH IN NCBWA NORTHEAST REGION PRESEASON POLL

2-11-08
CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball team is ranked fifth in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Northeast Regional preseason poll, the organization announced today. The Cougars, who were 25-15 last year, received 49 points in the poll, which is voted on by representatives of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, the East Coast Conference and the Northeast-10 Conference. Defending Northeast Region champion Franklin Pierce University was a unanimous selection at No. 1 in the poll.

Last season, Caldwell advanced to the NCAA Division II Northeast Region Tournament after finishing first in the CACC regular-season standings and taking second at the CACC Tournament. The Cougars lost just one starter while returning 19 players from that team, including all-CACC first team selections Robert Casal (Howard Beach, NY/St. Francis Prep), Chris Chiarappa (Elmont, NY/Holy Trinity), pictured, and Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC). Casal and Saxon also were named to the all-Northeast Region second team by the NCBWA, Daktronics and the American Baseball Coaches Association. Additionally, head coach Chris Reardon was chosen the CACC Coach of the Year for the second time in his seven-year career at Caldwell.

The Cougars begin the 2008 season at the Northeast Challenge in Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Feb. 22-24. Caldwell will face the region's top team when they play a doubleheader with Franklin Pierce on Saturday, Mar. 8 at Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y.
