CASAL CHOSEN CACC PITCHER OF THE YEAR

5-9-08
CALDWELL, N.J. - Caldwell College sophomore pitcher Robert Casal (Howard Beach, NY/St. Francis Prep) was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year as the conference's year-end awards were announced Thursday. Senior designated hitter Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville), junior pitcher Stephen Pfeil (Hampstead, NH/Pinherton Academy) and sophomore outfielder Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC) joined Casal on the all-CACC first team. Additionally, senior Chris Chiarappa (Elmont, NY/Holy Trinity) and sophomores Ray Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) and Buddy Riggs (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) made the all-CACC second team. Sophomore Omar Velazquez (Astoria, NY/Long Island City) received all-conference honorable mention.

Casal has a 7-4 record this season with a 2.24 earned-run average for the Cougars, who tied for first in the CACC during the regular season. He also has 91 strikeouts in 72 1/3 innings while allowing only 54 hits. A first team all-CACC and second team all-Northeast Region performer as a freshman, Casal was selected CACC Pitcher of the Week on Mar. 13.

Murphy returns to the all-CACC first team after earning all-conference honors in 2006. The CACC Player of the Week for the week ending Apr. 6, Murphy leads the team in hitting with an average of .384 despite missing 11 games due to injury. Pfeil makes his first appearance on the first team after posting a league-leading ERA of 1.69. He also has 93 strikeouts in 79 2/3 innings of work en route to a 4-4 record. Pfeil received CACC Pitcher of the Week honors twice and was named the ECAC co-Pitcher of the Week on Apr. 11. Saxon also is a repeat selection to the all-CACC first team after leading the Cougars in hits (53), doubles (13) and runs batted in (40) this year. He also has nine home runs, including yesterday's walk-off homer in the 10th inning of Caldwell's 6-5 victory over Dominican in the CACC Tournament.

Chiarappa earns his second consecutive all-conference honor after making the first team as a junior. An excellent defensive catcher, Chiarappa has thrown out 20 base runners in 54 stolen base attempts (37.0 percent). He also has had a good season at the plate, batting .281 with 10 doubles, a team-best three triples, two home runs and 25 RBIs. This is the second year on the second team for Keelan, an outfielder who is batting .329 with nine doubles, nine home runs and 29 RBIs. Although just a sophomore, Keelan already has 115 hits in his career. Riggs has been an effective reliever for Caldwell this season, recording five saves while making a team-high 23 appearances. He has a record of 4-3 with an ERA of 2.95 in 36 2/3 innings. Velazquez is batting .267 with 10 doubles, four home runs and 27 RBIs. He also is 3-1 as a pitcher, with two complete-game shutouts on the mound.

The Cougars (30-17) continue play at the CACC Tournament in Wilmington, Del., with a winner's bracket game against top-seeded Philadelphia University on Saturday, May 10.
