NORTH
WALES, PA. - The Caldwell College baseball team increased its
winning streak to six games after sweeping Chestnut Hill College,
3-2 and 9-5 Saturday afternoon in a Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference doubleheader at Hostelley Field. Senior Tommy Murphy
(Monroe, NY/Washingtonville), left, went 5-for-8 with a double, a
home run and two runs batted in on the day to lead the Cougars, who
are now 13-9 overall and 7-2 in conference play. The Griffins, who
are playing their first season of intercollegiate baseball, fall to
5-15, 3-4 CACC.
Caldwell struck first in Game 1, as freshman Gabriel Molina
(Bronx, NY/Monroe) led off the top of the third with a double, then
scored on a grounder by sophomore Jon Irwin (Mahopac,
NY/Mahopac) for a 1-0 lead. Chestnut Hill answered in the bottom of
the fourth, scoring twice for a 2-1 advantage. In the top of the
fifth, the Cougars tied the game on a RBI double by junior Jorge
Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella). With the game still tied
after seven innings, sophomore Ray Keelan (Barnegat,
NJ/Southern Regional) led off the top of the eighth with a single.
After sophomore Omar Velazquez (Astoria, NY/Long Island City)
bunted pinch runner Nick Questa (Boonton, NJ/Boonton) over to
second, senior Chris Chiarappa (Elmont, NY/Holy Trinity)
singled home Questa for the go-ahead run. Sophomore right-hander
Robert Casal (Howard Beach, NY/St. Francis Prep) retired the
Griffins in order in the bottom of the eighth to close out the win.
Molina had three hits, while Murphy, Torres and Velazquez each had
two hits to pace Caldwell's offense. Casal (4-3) pitched three
innings of relief to earn the win, while Ryan Weber (3-3) went the
distance and took the loss for Chestnut Hill.
Five runs in the top of the second inning of Game 2 put Caldwell in
control from the start. Chiarappa led off the inning with a home
run, while Irwin, Murphy and sophomore Adric Saxon (Coral
Springs, FL/Broward CC) also had RBIs in the inning. Murphy's solo
home run in the fourth put the Cougars ahead 6-0 before Chestnut
Hill scored twice in the bottom of the fourth. The Griffins answered
an unearned run by Caldwell in the top of the fourth with a two-run
home run by George Kochu in the bottom of the fifth, making the
score 7-4. Keelan's two-run double in the top of the seventh
restored the five-run lead, before the Griffins plated another run
in the bottom of the seventh for a 9-5 score. Murphy went 3-for-4
with a double, a home run, two runs and two RBIs.
Keelan pitched 4 2/3 innings in his first start of the season,
allowing five hits and four runs to earn the victory. Freshman
Juan Mejia (Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) also made his
debut on the mound today, tossing 2 1/3 innings of relief. Chris
Lauber (0-5) gave up eight hits and seven runs, four earned, in five
