PARSIPPANY,
N.J. - Freshman Gabriel Molina (Bronx, NY/Monroe) hit two
home runs and had six runs batted in to lead the Caldwell College
baseball team to a 15-3 victory over C.W. Post in a non-conference
game Monday afternoon at Smith Field. The Cougars, who pounded out a
season-high 20 hits and four home runs, improve to 18-13 on the
season, while the Pioneers fall to 16-18.
After C.W. Post scored a run in the top of the third for a 1-0 lead,
the Cougars scored 13 runs over the next four innings to take
control of the game. Sophomores Adric Saxon (Coral Spring,
FL/Broward CC) and Omar Velazquez (Astoria, NY/Long Island
City) had RBI singles in the bottom of the third, then sophomore
Doug Hilgenberg (Flemington, NJ/Huntingdon Central) hit a
two-run home run, his first of the season, in the fourth. Molina
followed with a three-run homer in the fifth. Not to be outdone,
Saxon blasted his team-leading sixth of the season, a three-run shot
to left in the sixth inning that put Caldwell up 10-1. Still in the
sixth, Molina hit another three-run homer for a 13-1 advantage.
Anthony Montesano and Mike Sylvester each had RBI singles for the
Pioneers in the eighth and ninth, sandwiched around a pair of
Caldwell runs driven in by senior Joe Hydro (Flemington, NJ/Immaculata)
and freshman Nick Questa (Boonton, NJ/Boonton) to close out
the scoring.
Sophomore Ray Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) earned
his first victory of the season after allowing one run on six hits
in five innings of work. Dan Walsh took the loss after giving up six
hits and four runs in four innings. Molina, Velazquez and Hilgenberg
each had three hits on the day, with Saxon driving in four runs.
Sylvester and Bryan Bonin also had three hits apiece for the
Pioneers.
Caldwell travels to Sparkill, N.Y., to face St. Thomas Aquinas
College on Wednesday, Apr. 16 in another non-conference game. The
first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
