CALDWELL SPLITS WITH POST IN BASEBALL
4-6-08
CC 7, PU 1
PU 10, CC 3
PARSIPPANY, N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball team
split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader with
Post University, winning 7-1 before losing 10-3 in the second game
Sunday afternoon at Smith Field. Sophomore Ray Keelan
(Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) hit two home runs on the day,
including a grand slam in the Game 1, as the long ball accounted for
all 10 of Caldwell's runs. The results give the Cougars a 14-10
overall record and an 8-3 mark in the conference. The split,
combined with a victory over the Cougars on Mar. 25, allows Post
(9-14, 2-3 CACC) to win the season series with Caldwell.
Caldwell loaded the bases in the top of the first inning of Game 1
on a pair of singles and an error. Keelan belted his third home run
of the season and first career grand slam to put the Cougars on top
4-0. Then in the second, junior Jorge Torres (Coral Springs,
FL/Taravella) hit his first homer of the year with senior Tommy
Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville) and sophomore Jon Irwin
(Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) on base for a 7-0 lead. That's all the run
support junior Stephen Pfeil (Hampstead, NH/Pinherton Acad.)
needed, as the right-hander held Post scoreless until Johnny
Figueroa hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh. Pfeil
allowed seven hits and one run while striking out eight in seven
innings to improve to 3-2. Richie Pierro (1-4) also went the
distance and took the loss for Post.
In the second game, Keelan and sophomores Adric Saxon (Coral
Springs, FL/Taravella) and Omar Velazquez (Astoria, NY/Long
Island City) each hit solo home runs for Caldwell. But a pair of
three-run innings in the second and fifth, and four more runs in the
top of the seventh, carried Post to the victory. Figueroa and Donnie
Dlabola each drove in three runs to help the Eagles beat Caldwell
and take the season series.
Michael Wolfe earned the win, allowing four hits and two runs in 4
1/3 innings to improve to 3-1. Sophomore Thomas Forkin
(Oceanside, NY/Holy Trinity) lasted 4 1/3 innings and gave up seven
hits and five runs while striking out four in his first collegiate
start.
Next up for Caldwell is a CACC game against Chestnut Hill College on
Monday, Apr. 7. The single game begins at 2:00 p.m. at Smith Field.
