WILMINGTON,
Del. - The Caldwell College baseball team lost an important Central
Atlantic Collegiate Conference game to Wilmington University, 4-3,
on a walk-off home run by Mike Wilson in the bottom of the ninth
Friday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Cougars who dropped to 20-14
overall and 12-7 in the conference, failed to gain ground on the
CACC-leading Wildcats, who are now 18-15, 12-1 CACC.
Freshman Gabriel Molina (Bronx, NY/Monroe) scored runs in the
second and fourth innings to give Caldwell a 2-0 lead. Fellow
freshman Edgar Santos (Woodside, NY/Bryant) singled home
Molina in the second, then junior Aaron Hoffstatter (Glasco,
NY/Saugerties), pictured, plated Molina with a double in the fourth.
The Wildcats scored their first run of the game in the sixth inning
on an RBI single by Spike Austin. But the Cougars restored their
two-run lead in the top of the eighth, when freshman Nick Questa
(Boonton, NJ/Boonton) came home on a sacrifice fly from junior
Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) for a 3-1 lead.
The Wildcats continued the comeback in the bottom of the eighth,
scoring on Drew Anuski's single and a bases-loaded walk by Chris
Brooks. After the Cougars failed to score in the top of the ninth,
Wilson hit a one-out, solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to
give Wilmington a 4-3 victory.
Junior pitcher Stephen Pfeil (Hampstead, NH/Pinherton Acad.)
held the Wildcats to one run on six hits while striking out eight in
seven innings for another quality start. Sophomores Buddy Riggs
(Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) and Thomas Forkin (Oceanside,
NY/Holy Trinity) pitched in relief, with Forkin (2-2) taking the
loss. Phil Aviola pitched a scoreless inning of relief to earn the
win.
The Cougars and Wildcats meet again on Saturday, Apr. 19 in a CACC
doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. at
Smith Field in Parsippany, N.J.
