CALDWELL BASEBALL SWEEPS WILMINGTON TO TAKE SEASON SERIES

N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball team won a pair of Central
Atlantic Collegiate Conference games against Wilmington College to
capture the season series with the Wildcats Saturday afternoon at
Smith Field. The Cougars, who followed Friday’s loss to Wilmington
with 7-2 and 15-0 wins on Saturday, are now 22-14 overall and 14-7
in the conference. The first-place Wildcats fall to 18-17, 12-3 CACC.
After Wilmington took a 2-0 lead in Game 1 with two runs in the top
of the first, the Cougars scored once in the third before putting
four runs on the board in the fourth. Sophomore Doug Hilgenberg
(Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) followed a lead-off single by
freshman Edgar Santos (Woodside, NY/Bryant) in the fourth
with his second home run of the season to put Caldwell up 3-2. Later
in the fourth, junior Jorge Torres (Coral Spring, FL/Taravella)
doubled home a pair of runs for a 5-2 advantage. Sophomores Omar
Velazquez (Astoria, NY/Long Island City) and Adric Saxon
(Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC) each drove in runs in the sixth to
make the score 7-2.
Sophomore right-hander Robert Casal (Howard Beach, NY/St.
Francis Prep) struck out a career-best 15 batters while allowed four
hits and two runs in a complete-game victory. Torres finished the
game 4-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Caldwell at the plate.
The Cougars took control of the second game early, scoring all 15
runs in the first four innings. Saxon hit two-run home runs in both
the first and second innings to give him a team-leading eight homers
this season. He finished the game going 4-for-4 with four runs and
four RBIs. Sophomore Ray Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern
Regional) hit a solo shot in the second, while freshman Gabriel
Molina (Bronx, NY/Monroe) belted a three-run home run in the
third. Seniors Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville) and
Chris Chiarappa (Elmont, NY/Holy Trinity) also excelled at
the plate, going 3-for-3 in the win, which marked the second time
this week that the Cougars scored 15 runs. Caldwell defeated C.W.
Post 15-3 on Apr. 14.
Velazquez pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing four hits while
striking out seven and walking none to improve to 2-0.
Next up for Caldwell is a non-conference game at Molloy College on
Tuesday, Apr. 22.
