BASEBALL RANKED SEVENTH IN NCBWA EAST REGION POLL

3-23-09
CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball team is ranked seventh in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association East Region Poll. The Cougars, who are 4-5 on the season, moved up one spot from last week's poll. UMass-Lowell took over the top spot from Franklin Pierce University and received five of six first-place votes.

Caldwell went 2-2 last week, losing twice to the top-ranked River Hawks in a pair of one-run games on Monday in Florida before beating New Haven and Concordia. Junior Ray Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) had three hits and junior Juan Pinero (Bronx, NY/Columbus) drove in three runs in the victory over New Haven. Pinero also hit his first home run as a Cougar in a 6-5 loss to UMass-Lowell in the second game. On the mound, junior right-hander Thomas Forkin (Oceanside, NY/Holy Trinity), pictured, pitched 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief against New Haven, retiring 15 of the final 16 batters he faced. In yesterday's 5-4 win at Concordia, junior Buddy Riggs (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) struck out 12 batters, while Keelan hit his first home run of the season.

The Cougars host Post University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Wednesday, Mar. 25. The first game starts at 3:00 p.m. at Smith Field in Parsippany, N.J.
