THREE CALDWELL BASEBALL PLAYERS EARN ALL-CACC HONORS

5-5-09

CALDWELL, N.J. - Caldwell College juniors Ray Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) and Buddy Riggs (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) were named to the all-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference first team for baseball, the league announced today. Additionally, junior Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC) was included on the all-CACC second team.

Keelan led the Cougars in seven offensive categories, including batting average (.387), hits (58), home runs (eight) and runs batted in (48). He had 19 multi-hit games, highlighted by a 4-for-4 performance against Concordia on Apr. 13. In an 11-5 extra-inning win over Bloomfield on Apr. 26, Keelan tied the game on a solo home run in the seventh inning, then hit a three-run homer in the eighth to help clinch the victory. He was named the CACC Player of the Week on Apr. 28 after batting .600 with four doubles, three home runs, 11 runs and 18 RBI in six games. This is the first time on the all-CACC first team for Keelan, who made the second team as a freshman and sophomore. He has 176 hits in his career to rank second all-time at Caldwell.

Riggs was Caldwell's top starting pitcher this season after anchoring the bullpen during his first two seasons. An all-CACC second team selection in 2008, Riggs was 6-2 with an earned run average of 3.58 in 12 appearances, including nine starts. In 60 1/3 innings this season, he struck out 72 batters to rank second in the CACC, and surrendered only 14 walks. In a 5-4 win at Concordia on Mar. 22, Riggs fanned 12 in five innings while allowing just three hits. He also set a career high with 15 strikeouts in a complete-game victory over Wilmington on Mar. 30. Riggs, who also had one save in relief this year, holds the school record with 10 saves in his career.

Saxon makes his third appearance on the all-CACC team, this time as a third baseman on the second team. A two-time all-CACC selection as an outfielder, Saxon batted .283 with six home runs, 12 doubles, two triples and 33 RBI. He was chosen CACC Player of the Week on Apr. 13 after batting .417 with two home runs and seven RBI. Saxon hit a walk-off home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning in a 2-1 win over Felician. He also racked up six RBI on three doubles and a home run in a win over Philadelphia on Apr. 19. A two-time all-Region honoree, Saxon is Caldwell's all-time leader in home runs (29) and RBI (137).

Caldwell, coached by Jay Messina, finished the season 18-23, including a CACC record of 12-15.
