PARSIPPANY,
N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball team lost a non-conference game to
Concordia College, 10-9 in 10 innings Monday afternoon at Smith Field. The
Cougars, who held an 8-1 lead through four innings, drop to 9-14 overall on
the season, while the Clippers improve to 17-17-1.
After Concordia scored a run on a wild pitch in the top of the first, the
Cougars put five runs on the board in the bottom of the second for a 5-1
lead. Juniors Juan Pinero (Bronx, NY/Columbus) and Andrew
Robertson (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) each had run-scoring doubles,
while junior Ray Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) singled home
a run. Another double by Pinero in the third plated junior Doug
Hilgenberg (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and senior Jorge Torres
(Coral Springs, FL/Taravella), then junior Miguel Perdomo (Teaneck,
NJ/Bergen Catholic) singled home Keelan in the fourth for an 8-1 Caldwell
advantage.
The game changed in favor of the Clippers in the top of the fifth. With two
out and a runner on third, Concordia recorded four hits and walked once to
score five runs and close the gap to 8-6. Matt Shelley had a two-run double
in the inning. Caldwell made the score 9-6 on a run-scoring single from
Torres in the bottom of the seventh, but the Clippers answered with two runs
in the top of the eighth to make it a one-run game. In the ninth, the
Cougars retired the first two batters, leaving the Clippers down to their
last out. But a walk and two singles, the last one by Kenny Espinal, tied
the game at 9-9.
In the top of the 10th, Concordia loaded the bases with one out. After
Caldwell recorded a grounder that forced a runner at home, Donny Madera
walked, scoring the go-ahead run. Pinero, pictured, hit a two-out double,
his third two-bagger of the game, in the bottom of the ninth. But pitcher
Jesse Horsham induced a groundout to end the game. The Cougars had 16 hits
but stranded 16 runners on base for the game. Keelan went 4-for-4 at the
plate, while Pinero and Torres each had three hits.
Horsham pitched three innings of relief to earn the victory. Senior Eric
Hines (Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) allowed an unearned run and a hit in one
inning of work to take the loss.
The Cougars play at Felician College on Tuesday, Apr. 14, beginning at 3:00
p.m.
