4-4-09
PU 9, CC 1
PU 7, CC 5
PHILADELPHIA, Penn. - The Caldwell College baseball team dropped two
games to Philadelphia University, 9-1 and 7-5 in a Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Cougars, who have lost four straight in conference play, fall to
6-13 overall and 1-7 in the CACC, while the Rams are now 7-18, 4-5 CACC.
Caldwell struggled at the plate in Game 1, managing only two hits off
Rams' pitching. Junior Andrew Robertson (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella),
left,
hit his first career home run in the top of the sixth for the Cougars'
only run of the game. Philadelphia scored five runs in the second
inning, one in the fourth and three more in the seventh. Dan Ellmer went
5-for-5 at the plate, while Tyler Mentzer had four RBI for the Rams.
Jared Farbman held the Cougars to two hits and one run while striking
out 13 and walking two in eight innings.
Philadelphia took an early lead in the second game with three runs in
the bottom of the first inning. Caldwell scored an unearned run in the
top of the second to make the score 3-1, only to have the Rams score in
the bottom of the second to lead 4-1. Senior Jorge Torres (Coral
Springs, FL/Taravella) singled home junior Ray Keelan (Barnegat,
NJ/Southern Regional) in the top of the fourth. But again Philadelphia
answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make the score
6-2. In the fifth, junior Omar Velazquez (Astoria, NY/Long Island
City) singled home Robertson, then scored on a triple by freshman Joe
Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan). Keelan followed with a
sacrifice fly to score Doerrer and pull the Cougars within one, 6-5.
In the top of the sixth, the Cougars advanced a runner to third base
with one out, but Rams' pitcher Kyle Noonan recorded a groundout and a
strikeout to end the inning. Philadelphia scored an insurance run in the
bottom of the sixth for a 7-5 lead. Noonan hit the first batter in the
top of the seventh, then retired the final three batters to earn the
save.
Junior right-hander Robert Casal (Howard Beach, NY/St. Francis
Prep) went the distance, allowing 10 hits and seven runs, six earned,
while striking out four and walking three. Garrett Buehler earned the
win after giving up two runs on two hits in four innings.
Caldwell is scheduled to host Bloomfield College for a single game on
Sunday, Apr. 5. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Smith Field in
Parsippany, N.J.
