CALDWELL BASEBALL RANKED 24TH IN LATEST PING! DIVISION II RANKINGS

2-23-09
CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball team is ranked 24th in the PING! Baseball Division II College Baseball Rankings, the publication announced today. The Cougars move up from the No. 28 ranking they received in PING! Baseball's preseason poll on Jan. 16.

Caldwell returns 16 players from last year's team that finished 34-19 while winning the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament and advancing to its second consecutive NCAA Division II Northeast Region Tournament. Among the five all-CACC performers back from last season is junior right-hander Robert Casal (Howard Beach, NY/St. Francis), the 2008 CACC Pitcher of the Year who was 9-4 with an earned run average of 1.89 and 106 strikeouts. Casal is one of nine pitchers who return from a staff that ranked fifth nationally with an ERA of 3.11 in 2008.

The Cougars, coached by Jay Messina, were picked first in the CACC Preseason Poll, released on Feb. 10. The team has finished first in the CACC regular-season standings the past two seasons and has qualified for the Northeast Regional in 2004, 2007 and 2008.

Caldwell opens the 2009 season on Mar. 12 with a non-conference game at Pace University.
