BASEBALL OPENS CACC SCHEDULE WITH TWO LOSSES TO POST
3-25-09
PU 4, CC 1
PU 2, CC 0
PARSIPPANY, N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball team played its first
Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Wednesday, losing
both games to Post University, 4-1 and 2-0 in the home opener at Smith
Field. The Cougars drop to 4-7 overall on the season and 0-2 in the
conference, while the Eagles improve to 11-4, 2-0 CACC.
In the first game, Caldwell took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after
freshman Joe Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan) led off with a single
and scored on a double by senior Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella).
Post tied the game with a run in the fourth, then took the lead with two
runs in the top of the sixth. An unearned run in the seventh gave the Eagles
a 4-1 lead. That's all the offense Post pitcher Brendan Wyman needed, as the
lefty held the Cougar bats to five hits while striking out eight in a
nine-inning effort. Freshman Matt Cook (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) took
the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits in 5 1/3
innings.
The Cougars ran into another tough lefty in Game 2, as Ben Schoenberg
pitched a seven-inning shutout while scattering six hits and striking out
eight. Caldwell's best chance came in the first inning, when the Cougars
loaded the bases on a single and two walks. But Schoenberg recorded a
strikeout to end the threat. Post scored a run in the first on a double by
Tyler Wilschetz, and scored another in the third on a passed ball. Freshman
right-hander A.J. Boardman (Sunnyside, NY/St. Francis Prep) had a
solid outing on the mound, allowing two runs, one earned, and four hits
while fanning eight in five innings of work. Doerrer had a pair of hits for
the Cougars in the loss.
Caldwell plays a non-conference game at Adelphi University on Thursday, Mar.
26. The game starts at 3:30 p.m. in Garden City, N.Y.
