box score
ALBANY,
N.Y. - Junior lefty Ray Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional)
allowed just one unearned run on six hits in a complete-game effort on the
mound, and had two hits, two runs and an RBI at the plate to pace the
Caldwell College baseball team to a 7-1 victory over the College of St. Rose
Wednesday afternoon at Bleecker Stadium. The non-conference win gives the
Cougars a 6-11 record on the season, while the Golden Knights fall to 7-15.
Caldwell scored a pair of runs in the first inning on an error and a walk
with the bases loaded to take an early 2-0 lead. St. Rose answered in the
bottom of the second, scoring a run on a Cougar error to make the score 2-1.
In the top of the fifth, another bases-loaded walk led to another Caldwell
run for a 3-1 lead. Junior Doug Hilgenberg (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon
Central) drove in senior Aaron Hoffstatter (Glasco, NY/Saugerties)
with a single in the sixth to put Caldwell on top 4-1. Keelan proceeded to
retire the next nine batters in order on four fly balls, four groundouts and
a strikeout. In the top of the ninth, Keelan doubled home junior Andrew
Robertson (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella), then later scored on a grounder
by freshman Jorge Ynoa (Bayside, NY/Bayside). Hoffstatter eventually
came home on a passed ball to give Caldwell a 7-1 lead. Keelan gave up a
pair of two-out singles in the bottom of the ninth, but then ended the game
on a lineout for a 7-1 win.
The Cougars had 11 hits, including three from junior Omar Velazquez
(Astoria, NY/Long Island City) and two each from Keelan and Hilgenberg.
Keelan scattered six hits over nine innings while walking three and striking
out four to improve to 1-1. Doug Dulin (0-1) pitched 4 2/3 innings and took
the loss for the Golden Knights.
Caldwell hosts Philadelphia University on Friday, Apr. 3 in a Central
Atlantic Collegiate Conference game. The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. at
Smith Field in Parsippany, N.J.
