CALDWELL TO HOST CACC TOURNAMENT SEMIFINAL GAME ON MAR. 5

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team will host a semifinal game in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament on Wednesday, Mar. 5. The Cougars, who won the 2007 CACC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Division II Northeast Regional, will play Holy Family University at 7:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.

Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children. Caldwell students will be admitted free courtesy Student Activities and the Athletic Department.

Caldwell began defense of its conference championship by defeating Dominican College, 79-65 in the quarterfinals on Saturday, Mar. 1 in the Newman Center. The victory, coupled with top-seeded Post University’s upset loss to fourth-seeded Bloomfield College, left the second-seeded Cougars as the highest remaining seed in the CACC North Division. The top remaining seeds in each division play at home in the semifinals. Philadelphia University, which went 16-0 in the CACC during the regular season, will host Bloomfield on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the other semifinal.

The Cougars are led by junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.), who scored a game-high 20 points in the quarterfinal victory over Dominican. Perez (pictured), a three-time all-CACC second team honoree, is averaging 14.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game this season. Holy Family features high-scoring guard Michael Sturns, who leads the nation in scoring at 26.9 points per game. The 2008 CACC Player of the Year, Sturns scored 31 points in the Tigers’ 73-71 win over Goldey-Beacom College in the quarterfinals.

The CACC Tournament finals will be played on Saturday, Mar. 8 at the highest remaining seed.

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team shot 72.2 percent from the field in the second half to defeat Dominican College, 79-65 in the quarterfinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon in the George R. Newman Center. The win gives the Cougars a 12-16 overall record and advances them into the semifinals of the CACC Tournament. The Chargers end their season at 13-15.

As a result of Bloomfield's upset of CACC North Division-champion Post, Caldwell is the highest remaining seed in the North and will host Holy Family University in the semifinals on Wednesday, Mar. 5, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The first half remained close until the final four minutes. With Dominican ahead 22-20, the Cougars closed out the half with a 14-3 run that included three-pointers by sophomore guard Eddie Crockett (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) and junior guard Carl Augustin (Stony Point, NY/Don Bosco Prep), and four points from senior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior New American). Crockett and junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) each scored eight points in the half to help Caldwell take a 34-25 halftime lead.

The Cougars stayed hot in the second half, jumping out to a 46-30 advantage with a 10-5 spree, buoyed by five points apiece from Crockett and Suchy. Dominican came within 10 points twice, but a 16-5 Caldwell run swung momentum in favor of the Cougars, who led 66-45 midway through the second half. The Cougars extended the lead to 23 points before the Chargers pulled to within 12 points twice, including 77-65 with a minute on the clock. But it wasn't enough, as Caldwell went on to win the game by a 14-point margin.

The Cougars hit 13-of-18 from the floor in the second half, including 3-of-5 from three-point range, to maintain the upper hand. Dominican struggled from long range, making just one three-pointer in 21 attempts for the game. Perez, left, made 7-of-8 from the field en route to a game-high 20 points for Caldwell. Suchy and Crockett, right, finished with 16 and 13 points, respectively, while sophomore forward Sam Cricelli (Brighton, England/Culham) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds to go with 10 points. Brandon Brock scored 17 points to pace Dominican.

Caldwell, the 2007 CACC Tournament champions, continues its title defense on Wednesday, Mar. 5, with a semifinal match-up against Holy Family University, a 73-71 winner over Goldey-Beacom College in its quarterfinal game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.

AUGUSTIN'S LATE BASKET GIVES COUGARS A 54-53 VICTORY OVER NYACK

CALDWELL, N.J. - A driving lay-up by junior guard Carl Augustin (Stony Point, NY/Don Bosco Prep) with six seconds on the clock allowed the Caldwell College men's basketball team to defeat Nyack College, 54-53 in the regular-season finale Wednesday night at the George R. Newman Center. The victory wraps up second place in the CACC North Division for the Cougars, who are now 11-16 overall and 9-7 in the conference. Nyack finished its season at 11-16, 6-10 CACC.

With the Cougars trailing 53-50, junior center Michael Luzzi (Mount Arlington, NJ/Morris Catholic) made 1-of-2 from the free throw line to make the score 53-51 with 1:25 remaining. After the teams each failed to score on their next possessions, Luzzi blocked a lay-up attempt by John Vandunk with the clock winding down. Junior forward Tyler Emmons (Portland, ME/Portland) was fouled after grabbing the rebound, then made 1-of-2 at the line to make the score 53-52 Nyack with 11 seconds to play. Vandunk gathered the rebound off Emmons' miss and is fouled. He then misses the front end of a 1-and-1, with senior guard Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) collecting the rebound. Augustin takes the ball and drives to the basket, where he is fouled before making the go-ahead lay-up with six seconds left. Augustin missed the free throw, but Vandunk turned the ball over as time expires.

The Cougars completed the comeback after trailing by as many as 14 points in the second half. Nyack, which took a 28-24 halftime lead, scored the first eight points of the second half to take a commanding 38-24 advantage at the 17:31 mark. Caldwell used a 13-2 run to cut the deficit to 44-42 midway through the half. A basket by sophomore guard Eddie Crockett (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) with 5:17 to play gave the Cougars their first lead of the second half at 48-47. The lead exchanged hands twice before back-to-back baskets by James Oyamo put Nyack ahead 53-50 with 2:22 left.

Crockett scored 11 points to lead Caldwell, which received nine points and three steals from Wise and seven points and six boards from Luzzi. The Cougars shot 50.0 percent from the floor compared to 36.0 percent for Nyack, which was led by Vandunk's 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The win marked the final regular-season home game for seniors Wise, Adam Sabree (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) Hans Stelzer (Selden, NY/Our Savior New American), B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior New American).

The Cougars will host Dominican College on Saturday, Mar. 1 in the quarterfinals of the CACC Tournament. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.

PEREZ, SUCHY NAMED ALL-CACC IN MEN'S HOOPS

Feb. 26, 2008 - Junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) and senior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior New American) were honored by the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference on the all-CACC Men's Basketball teams, which were released today. CALDWELL DROPS CACC CONTEST TO UNBEATEN RAMS

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team was unable to put the first blemish on Philadelphia University's perfect conference record, losing 72-54 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match-up Saturday afternoon at the Gallagher Center. The Rams remain unbeaten in the conference at 15-0 (18-11 overall), while the Cougars lose their third game in a row to fall to 10-16, 8-7 CACC.

Caldwell shot just 31.5 percent from the field for the game, including just 23.1 percent in the first half in which the Rams built a 32-18 lead at the break. On the other side of the court, Philadelphia made 62.9 percent from the floor to keep the Cougars trailing for most of the game.

Junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) led three Cougars in double figures with 13 points. Senior guard Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) and sophomore guard Eddie Crockett (Passaic, NJ/Passaic), pictured, each scored 11 points, with Crockett dishing our five assists. Russell Frederick and Jason Hickenbottom paced the Rams with 25 and 20 points, respectively. Further details of this game were not available.

CHESTNUT HILL TOPPLES CALDWELL IN OVERTIME, 81-73

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team fell in overtime to Chestnut Hill College, 81-73 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena. The Griffins out-scored the Cougars 19-11 in the overtime period to win the first meeting between the two schools. The loss leaves Caldwell with a 10-15 overall record and a 8-6 mark in the conference, while Chestnut Hill improves to 4-19, 3-10 CACC.

After a close first half that saw the Griffins take a 33-30 lead at halftime, the Cougars scored the first 11 points of the second half to grab a 41-33 advantage with 15 minutes to play. With Caldwell still on top, 47-40 with 11 minutes to go, Chestnut Hill fought back into the game with a 14-2 run that gave them a 54-49 lead with 5:32 remaining in regulation. The Cougars still trailed 60-54 when a three-pointer by sophomore guard Eddie Crockett (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) and a basket by junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) made it a one-point game in favor of the Griffins, 60-59 with two minutes left. After Chestnut Hill made 2-of-4 from the line to lead 62-59 with 22 seconds on the clock, senior guard Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) buried a three, his fourth of the game, to tie the score at 62-62 with 12 seconds to go. A final attempt by Brandon Williams was off the mark, sending the game to overtime.

Kevin Whaley got things started in the Griffins' favor by hitting a three-pointer in Chestnut Hill's first possession of the extra period. After a basket by Lars Jeter put the Griffins ahead 67-62, the hosts proceeded to hit 12 consecutive free throws on their next six possessions to hold off the Cougars and clinch the overtime win. The Griffins took advantage of going to the free throw line 22 times more than Caldwell for the game, making 33-of-37 compared to 10-of-15 for the Cougars.

Perez tallied a game-high 24 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the field, while grabbing a team-best 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Wise hit five three-pointers en route to 17 points, while Crockett finished with a career-high 13 points to go with four assists. Williams and Julian McFadden each scored 19 points to lead the Griffins, with McFadden making 11-of-12 from the free throw line.

The Cougars return to Philadelphia, Pa., on Saturday, Feb. 23 to face Philadelphia University in another CACC match-up. The game is set to start at 4:00 p.m.

MEN'S HOOPS STUMBLES AT DOWLING, 64-42

OAKDALE, N.Y. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team struggled offensively in a 64-42 loss to Dowling College in a non-conference contest Tuesday evening at St. John's University's Eastern Long Island Campus. The defeat ended a two-game winning streak for the Cougars, who are now 10-14 on the season. The lions improve to 8-15.

Dowling led by as many as nine points in the first half before Caldwell was able to cut the lead to four before halftime. A pair of free throws by senior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior New American) and a conventional three-point play by sophomore center Wojciech Bocianowski (Warsaw, Poland/Life Center Acad.), pictured, made the score 26-22 in favor of Dowling at the break. The Cougars were able to stay within striking distance despite making just 6-of-23 from the field compared to 10-of-20 for the Lions in the first half.

Baskets by junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) and senior guard Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) sandwiched around a three-pointer by Dowling's Genc Selimi cut the Lions' lead to 29-26 with 16:28 on the clock. Dowling followed with a 10-3 run to take a commanding 39-29 lead at the 11:33 mark. The advantage would grow to 21 points after a 13-0 spree put the Lions on top 58-37 with 4:23 to play. The Cougars' shooting woes continued in the second half, as Caldwell hit just 25.0 percent from the floor after halftime to finish the game shooting a season-low 25.5 percent.

Suchy and Perez each scored eight points to lead the Cougars, with Perez grabbing a team-best five rebounds. David Seagers recorded 18 points and seven assists for Dowling, with Selimi pitching in 13 points and 11 boards.

Caldwell travels to Philadelphia, Pa., on Saturday, Feb. 16 to face Chestnut Hill College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.

DeSOUZA, LOZANO TO JOIN MEN'S BASKETBALL IN 2008-09

Feb. 11, 2008 - Matt DeSouza of Linwood, N.J., and Emil Lozano of Clifton, N.J., have signed National Letters of Intent to play basketball at Caldwell College, men's basketball coach Mark A. Corino announced. The two high school standouts, who committed during the fall early signing period, will enroll at Caldwell College for the 2008-09 academic year. (more)

Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior New American) tallied 22 points and seven rebounds as the Caldwell College men's basketball team earned a 75-68 victory over Nyack College in an important Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match-up Saturday night at Nyack's Bowman Gymnasium. The result keeps the Cougars (10-13) in second place in the CACC North Division standings, one game behind Post University, with an 8-5 conference record. The Warriors (10-13) drop into a tie for fourth with Bloomfield College at 5-7.

Nyack jumped out to a 22-15 lead after a basket by Sheanan Martinez with just over eight minutes to play in the first half. But five points from Suchy and a three-pointer by freshman guard Dante Rollins (East Orange, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) sparked an 11-4 Caldwell run that tied the game, 26-26 with 5:44 left in the half. After a jumper by Nyack's Valient Jones, a three from sophomore forward Tyler Emmons (Portland, ME/Portland) helped the Cougars close out the half with an 8-2 run that made the score 34-30 at the break.

Caldwell continued to shoot well from long range in the second half, as a three-pointer by senior guard Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) started a 10-2 spree for the Cougars that put them ahead 44-32 four minutes into the second half. Caldwell maintained the upper hand, leading 55-44 following a conventional three-point play by senior guard Adam Sabree (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) at the 10:25 mark. Back-to-back threes from Jose Lopez and a basket by Brandon Coerbell pulled the Warriors to within three, 55-52 midway through the second half. But Wise hit another three to answer for Caldwell, which built its lead back up to as many as 10 points down the stretch to wrap up its second straight win over a CACC North opponent.

Suchy made 7-of-12 from the field, including two three-pointers, on his way to a game-high 22 points. Junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) scored 13 points, and Sabree added 12 points in the win. Wise contributed nine points, four assists and two steals. Jones finished with 16 points to pace Nyack.

MEN'S BASKETBALL PICKS UP KEY ROAD WIN AT BLOOMFIELD, 79-74

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - Junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) scored a team-high 24 points to lead the Caldwell College men's basketball team to a 79-74 victory at Bloomfield College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Thursday night at the Bloomfield Gymnasium. The win puts the Cougars in second place in the CACC North Division with a 7-5 conference record (9-13 overall), while the Deacons (13-12)remain in fifth place at 4-7.

Bloomfield's Gage Daye hit a pair of threes in the game's first three minutes to help the Deacons jump out to a 12-2 lead. The advantage would grow to as many as 14 after Elias Brantley completed a conventional three-point play to put Bloomfield ahead 30-16 with 7:44 remaining in the half. The Cougars answered with 12 consecutive points, buoyed by three-pointers from senior guard Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) and sophomore guard Eddie Crockett (Passaic, NJ/Passaic), that made the score 30-28 Bloomfield with 3:44 on the clock. The Deacons maintained the lead for the remainder of the half, taking a 37-34 advantage into the break.

The teams battled for control throughout the second half, as there were 11 lead changes and six ties after halftime. With the score tied 65-65 with just under five minutes to play, Perez nailed a three-pointer from the left corner to put the Cougars on top. That play sparked a 9-0 run that resulted in a 74-65 Caldwell lead with 1:07 left to play. But Bloomfield did not surrender, as Omari Knox hit a three-pointer to start a 7-0 run that pulled the Deacons to within two, 74-72 with 28 seconds remaining. The Cougars held onto the lead by stopping Bloomfield on its next two possessions while making 4-of-5 from the line down the stretch. Perez tallied a block, two rebounds and four free throws in the game's final 20 seconds to preserve the win.

Perez was 8-of-12 from the field and 7-of-8 from the line en route to his fifth game with 20 or more points this season. He also grabbed 10 rebounds, as did senior guard Adam Sabree (Detroit, MI/Renaissance), helping Caldwell earn a 46-32 rebounding advantage. Wise finished with 13 points, while Sabree also pitched in 12 points, four assists and three steals. Knox led all scorers with 25 points, and Daye tallied 19 points and seven assists for the Deacons.

MEN'S HOOPS LOSES AT POST, 63-55

WATERBURY, Conn. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game at Post University, 63-55 Tuesday evening in the Drubner Center. The loss leaves the Cougars with a 6-5 conference record (8-13 overall), while the Eagles (11-11) remain in first place in the CACC North Division with an 8-4 mark.

Caldwell led for most of the first half after scoring the first seven points of the game. Junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) helped the Cougars maintain the upper hand by scoring 17 points in the first half alone. After a free throw by Perez made the score 22-17 Caldwell at the 3:26 mark, five straight points from Post's Arthur Robertson tied the game at 22-22 with 2:28 left in the half. The Eagles finished the half strong and took a 27-24 lead at halftime.

Garvin McAlister opened the second half with a three-pointer for a 30-24 Eagles lead. The Cougars answered with three points from senior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior New American) and a three-pointer by sophomore guard Eddie Crockett (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) that tied the game at 30-30 with 17:18 to play. A 7-0 run allowed Post to take control of the game and grab a 37-30 advantage, then six straight points later in the half gave the Eagles its largest lead, 51-40 with 6:14 to play. Caldwell never came closer than six points the rest of the way, as Post extended its cushion in the North Division over the Cougars and Dominican College, who have identical 6-5 CACC records.

Perez finished with 25 points and eight rebounds to lead Caldwell, while Robertson tallied 22 points and 11 rebounds for Post.

The Cougars face CACC North-rival Bloomfield College on Thursday, Feb. 7 in their next game. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. in the Bloomfield Gymnasium.

CALDWELL, N.J. - Senior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior New American) scored 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field to lead the Caldwell College men's basketball team to an 81-64 triumph over Felician College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest Saturday night in the George R. Newman Center. The win is the Cougars third in a row and improves their record to 8-12 overall and 6-4 in the conference. The Golden Falcons drop to 8-12, 6-4 CACC with the loss.

The Cougars came out of the gate shooting the lights out, hitting 16-of-21 from the floor in the first half for an impressive 76.2 percent. In fact, Caldwell made its first seven shots of the half, with its first miss coming at the 11:06 mark. Suchy, pictured, made all six of his attempts, including two three-pointers, as Caldwell jumped out to a 42-20 lead at halftime. On the other side, Felician made just 7-of-25 (28.0 percent) from the field in managing to score just 20 points in the game's first 20 minutes.

The Cougars continued to play well in the second half, building the lead up to 61-30 with 11:08 to play. But the Golden Falcons did not give up, storming back in the game with a 30-11 run that made the score 72-60 with 3:12 on the clock. Freshmen Kashiff Foster and Devon Young scored 12 and eight points, respectively in the run. But it was too little, too late for the Golden Falcons, as the Cougars closed out the game with a dunk by junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) and four points from sophomore guard Eddie Crockett (Passaic, NJ/Passaic).

Caldwell finished the game shooting 57.4 percent from the field compared to 40.0 percent for Felician. The Cougars also dished out 16 assists while committing 11 turnovers. This is the fifth 20-point game this season for Suchy, who has scored in double figures in five of the last six games. Perez finished with 16 points, while junior guard Carl Augustin (Stony Point, NY/Don Bosco Prep) had 10. Young scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Foster finished with 15 points for Felician, which out-rebounded the Cougars 38-32.

Caldwell is back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 5, when the Cougars play at CACC North Division-leading Post University. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. in Waterbury, Conn.

AUGUSTIN LEADS COUGARS PAST CHARGERS IN MEN'S BASKETBALL

CALDWELL, N.J. - Junior guard Carl Augustin (Stony Point, NY/Don Bosco Prep), pictured, scored a career-high 18 points off the bench to spark the Caldwell College men's basketball team to a 49-45 victory over Dominican College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Wednesday night in the George R. Newman Center. The victory improves the Cougars to 7-12 overall and ties them with the Chargers (10-10) in the CACC North standings at 5-4.

The two teams battled back and forth in the first half, which saw eight ties and seven lead changes. With the Cougars trailing 21-19 at the four-minute mark, Augustin converted a conventional three-point play with three minutes on the clock for a 22-21 lead. The play ignited a 10-0 Caldwell run that put the Cougars on top 29-21 with 26 seconds to go in the half. Two free throws from Tim Matchett allowed Dominican to cut the deficit to 29-23 at halftime.

The second half proved to be a defensive struggle, as the teams combined to score just nine points in the first five minutes. Augustin scored Caldwell's first points of the half with a three-pointer with 16:36 to play. A lay-up by junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) at the 15-minute mark gave Caldwell its largest lead of the game, 34-25. But a 9-1 run capped by a three-pointer from Brendan McManus brought the Chargers to within one, 35-34 with 11:44 remaining. The Cougars regained control of the game with a 10-4 run, buoyed by six points from Augustin and four from Perez, that gave Caldwell a 45-38 advantage with 4:42 left. Dominican came within two points with 24 seconds on the clock and had a chance to take the lead, but a missed three-pointer and two free throws from senior guard Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) wrapped up the win for Caldwell.

The Cougars won the game despite shooting just 28.6 percent from the floor in the second half. Augustin, whose previous career high was 14 points, was 6-of-11 from the field and 4-of-4 from the line. He also had five rebounds and two steals. Senior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior New American) scored 11 points, while Perez pulled down a game-high 11 boards to help the Cougars hold a 37-31 edge on the glass. Will Carty paced Dominican with 10 points and five steals.

Next up for Caldwell is another CACC North Division game with Felician College on Saturday, Feb. 2. The game is set to begin at 8:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.

COUGARS UPEND EAGLES IN MEN'S BASKETBALL, 66-55

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team ended a three-game losing streak with a 66-55 victory over Post University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest Wednesday evening in the George R. Newman Center. The Cougars (6-12 overall) even their conference record at 4-4 while pulling to within a game of the North Division-leading Eagles, who fall to 8-9 overall, 5-3 CACC.

The game remained close in the first half with five ties and 10 lead changes. With the game tied at 26-26 with three minutes left in the half, two free throws by freshman guard Dante Rollins (East Orange, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) and a basket by senior guard Adam Sabree (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) put Caldwell ahead 30-26 with just over a minute before halftime. Post's Peter Lawal answered, converting a conventional three-point play to make the score 30-29 Caldwell at the break. The Cougars shot 52.4 percent in the half, led by senior guard Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.), who scored 13 points while making 3-of-5 from three-point range.

The game remained tight in the second half with four ties in the first seven minutes. Trailing 40-38 with 13:46 on the clock, the Cougars scored the next seven points to take a 45-40 advantage midway through the second half. Back-to-back baskets from senior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior New American) brought the Cougar lead to 56-47 with 3:24 left. After Arthur Robertson's conventional three-point play, Sabree hit a three-pointer and Wise made two free throws to make the score 61-50 with two minutes remaining. Post never came closer than eight points the rest of the way, as Caldwell won for the first time since Jan. 8.

The Cougars made 51.1 percent of their field goal attempts for the game while holding Post to 35.5 percent. The shooting disparity and a 43-26 rebounding advantage helped Caldwell overcome18 turnovers and 60.0 percent shooting from the line. Wise finished the game with 17 points to match his career high. Suchy scored 11 points, with sophomore forward Tyler Emmons (Portland, ME/Portland), pictured, grabbing a career-best eight boards to go with five points. Rollins also achieved a career high with eight points. Robertson led the Eagles with 14 points and five rebounds.

Caldwell returns to action next Wednesday, Jan. 30 with a home CACC game against Dominican College. The North Division battle begins at 8:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.

With their third loss in a row, the Cougars drop to 5-12 overall and 3-4 in the conference, while the Tigers improve to 10-7, 4-3 CACC.

Caldwell jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the game's first eight minutes, getting six points from senior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior New American), pictured, and five from junior guard Carl Augustin (Stony Point, NY/Don Bosco Prep). After a basket by Suchy made the score 16-7 at the 9:45 mark, the Tigers responded by out-scoring Caldwell 23-8 for the remainder of the half. The Cougars made just 2-of-10 from the field during that stretch and 29.0 percent from the floor for the half.

Three-pointers by sophomore guard Eddie Crockett (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) and senior guard Adam Sabree (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) brought Caldwell to within two points, 32-20 two minutes into the second half. But a 10-3 run, capped by a three from Ceazer Johnson, gave Holy Family a 44-35 advantage with just under 14 minutes to play. The lead remained nine points with 6:22 on the clock before a trey from senior guard Hans Stelzer (Selden, NY/Our Savior New American) and a basket by junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) pulled the Cougars to within four, 52-48 with five minutes left. But the Tigers scored the next six points, and the Cougars never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Caldwell shot the ball better in the second half, making 54.2 percent from the floor. But the Cougars couldn't prevent the Tigers from doing the same, as Holy Family shot 57.7 percent after halftime. Perez and Suchy each scored 13 points, with Perez grabbing a team-best eight rebounds. Crockett dished out a career-high eight assists. Michael Sturns, the nation's leading scorer who was averaging 25.1 points per game heading into today's contest, scored a game-high 18 points to go with nine rebounds for the Tigers.

The Cougars host Post University in a CACC North Division clash on Wednesday, Jan. 23. The game is set to start at 8:00 p.m. at the George R. Newman Center.

DEACONS EDGE COUGARS IN OVERTIME, 66-64

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team came up just short in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference battle with Bloomfield College, falling in overtime, 66-64 Wednesday night in the George R. Newman Center. The Cougars are now 5-11 overall and 3-3 in the conference, while the Deacons improve to 12-7, 3-3 CACC.

After trailing since the 1:40 mark of the first half, the Cougars took their first lead of the second half on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Eddie Crockett (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) that made the score 47-45 Caldwell with 3:45 left in regulation. The Cougars held a three-point lead with 1:34 on the clock after a lay-up from senior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior New American) put his team up 51-48. But a basket by Barney Anderson, followed by a conventional three-point play from Omari Knox, gave the lead back to Bloomfield, 53-51 with just under a minute to play. Junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) tied the game with a basket with 34 seconds left. After the Cougars forced a turnover with six second on the clock, senior guard Adam Sabree (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) put up a shot from 10 feet, but it didn't drop, forcing overtime.

The overtime period remained close throughout as both teams fought hard for the win. Sabree's three-pointer with 2:31 left gave Caldwell a 58-56 advantage. After Knox and Perez each made two free throws for their teams, Namdi Ahaneku grabbed an offensive rebound, made a lay-up and was fouled with 1:25 to play. Ahaneku made the ensuing free throw for a 61-60 Bloomfield lead. Perez put the Cougars back on top with a thunderous dunk off a missed shot, but two free throws by Roahn Sheppard with 45 seconds left restored Bloomfield's lead, 63-62. Perez answered back with two free throws of his own, but again Bloomfield answered when Gage Daye was fouled and made two free throws with 16 seconds left for a 65-64 lead. After a Caldwell turnover and one free throw by Ahaneku, the Cougars had a chance with four seconds left. But a game-tying lay-up by Crockett went in after the buzzer and did not count.

Caldwell committed 23 turnovers compared to 15 for Bloomfield while making just 61.9 percent from the line, nearly 10 percent lower than their season average.

Perez recorded 23 points and 14 rebounds while going 7-of-11 from the floor to pace the Cougars. Sabree finished with 12 points, and freshman forward Sam Cricelli (Brighton, England/Culham) had 11 points and seven rebounds. Daye had 14 points, five assists and four steals, Knox finished with 13 points and Ahaneku tallied 10 points, 12 boards and three steals for Bloomfield.

The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Jan. 19, when they play at Holy Family University in another CACC contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - A late comeback attempt fell just short as the Caldwell College men's basketball team lost to Dominican College, 80-77 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Thursday evening at the Hennessy Center. The defeat ends a three-game winning streak for the Cougars, who are now 5-10 overall and 3-2 in the conference. The Chargers snap a two-game losing skid to improve to 7-7, 2-2 CACC.

After a three-pointer by Dominican's Will Carty put the Chargers ahead 76-69 with three minutes to play, seven points by senior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior New American) sparked an 8-2 Caldwell run that made the score 78-77 Dominican with 52 seconds on the clock. The Cougars forced a turnover on the next possession and had an opportunity to take the lead, but Suchy's jumper with nine seconds left was off the mark. Brandon Brock, who grabbed the rebound, was fouled and made both foul shots for an 80-77 advantage. A three-pointer at the buzzer by senior guard Hans Stelzer (Selden, NY/Our Savior New American) did not drop, sealing the Cougars' fate.

Caldwell led for most of the first half and took a 38-37 lead at the break. The Chargers opened the second half with an 11-3 run to go ahead 48-41, only to have the Cougars tie the game on five points from Suchy and a lay-up by sophomore guard Eddie Crockett (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) that made it 48-48 with 14:32 left. Dominican maintained the upper hand but never led by more than six points until Carty's three-pointer at the three-minute mark. The Chargers held the hot hand in the second half, making 64.3 percent of their shots from the field. Caldwell also shot the ball well, shooting 54.7 percent for the game. But the Cougars turned the ball over 20 times, resulting in 23 points for Dominican.

Suchy led all scorers with 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 from the line. Junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) tallied 15 points and a team-best seven rebounds, while Crockett scored 10 points. The Chargers had a balanced attack offensively, as Carty, Brock and Kresimar Knez each scored 13 points. Knez also had eight boards in the win.

Next up for Caldwell is a home game against CACC North rival Bloomfield College on Wednesday, Jan. 16. The game is scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.

COUGARS DEFEAT DEVILS, 61-55 IN MEN'S HOOPS

Newman Center. The victory gives the Cougars a 3-1 record in the conference and a 5-9 mark overall, while the Devils fall to 4-6, 1-3 CACC.

The Cougars took an early 12-3 lead in the game's first six minutes and 22 seconds, buoyed by a pair of threes from senior guard Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.). But Caldwell failed to score over the next 7:18, allowing USP to take a 14-12 lead. A dunk by junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) helped the Cougars grab a 22-18 lead with 1:47 left in the half, but two free throws by Charlie Fritsch and a put-back from Jarrod Frazier tied the game at 22-22 at the break.

The Cougars eventually took back the lead by opening the second half with a 16-6 run for a 38-28 advantage at the 12:17 mark. The Devils fought back, pulling to within four points after a three-pointer by Keith Dundas made the score 43-39 with 7:11 left. A conventional three-point play by sophomore guard Eddie Crockett (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) sparked a 10-3 run that was capped by a three-pointer by junior guard Carl Augustin (Stony Point, NY/Don Bosco Prep) to give Caldwell a 53-42 lead with 4:41 to play. Again the Devils would not go away, as they used a 9-1 run to trail 56-53 with 36 seconds on the clock. But the Cougars made 5-of-8 from the line down the stretch to wrap up the victory.

Caldwell forced 19 turnovers and had 10 steals, but were out-rebounded 39-22 by the Devils, who grabbed 19 offensive boards.

Wise, pictured, led the Cougars with 16 points, while Augustin scored 14 points and Perez had 11. Senior guard Hans Stelzer (Selden, NY/Our Savior New American) tallied five assists and four steals, and senior guard Adam Sabree (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) snared a team-best six rebounds. Fritsch and Tramar Beaman paced USP with 13 points apiece.

The Cougars will play at Dominican College in a CACC contest on Thursday, Jan. 10. Game time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. in Orangeburg, N.Y.

PEREZ PACES CALDWELL TO 74-57 WIN OVER WILMINGTON IN MEN'S HOOPS

Newman Center. The victory is the Cougars' second in a row and improves their record to 4-9 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The Wildcats fall to 5-7, 1-2 CACC.

Caldwell led from start to finish, leading by as many as 20 points in the first half before taking a 36-20 advantage at the break. The bulge was created by a 27-9 run over 12 minutes that put the home team ahead 36-16 with a minute left in the half. Perez scored 10 points and junior guard Carl Augustin (Stony Point, NY/Don Bosco Prep) had nine in the spree. The Cougars made 13-of-14 from the free throw line in the first half, compared to just 3-of-16 for Wilmington.

The second half was more even, as the Wildcats pulled to within 10 points three times, including 59-49 with 5:23 remaining. But that's as close as Wilmington would get, with the Cougars finishing strong by out-scoring Wilmington 15-8 the rest of the way. Caldwell enjoyed a huge advantage at the free throw line, going 27-for-32 (84.4 percent) compared to 8-for-25 (32.0 percent) for Wilmington.

Perez, whose consecutive free throws streak ended at 22, scored 25 points for the second time in three games, making 8-of-13 from the field and 9-of-10 from the line. He also recorded three blocks. Augustin finished with 12 points, and junior center Michael Luzzi (Mount Arlington, NJ/Morris Catholic) recorded season highs of 10 points and seven rebounds. Kevin Cooper led the Wildcats with 16 points and eight boards.

The Cougars host the University of the Sciences on Tuesday, Jan. 8 in a rematch of last year's CACC Tournament final. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.

The victory ends a seven-game losing streak for the Cougars (3-9), while the Knights drop to 2-9.

After Terrell Simmons' free throws put Queens ahead 67-65 with just under a minute to play, junior guard Carl Augustin (Stony Point, NY/Don Bosco Prep) made 1-of-2 from the line with 43 seconds on the clock. The Cougars forced a turnover with 26 seconds left, then Augustin was fouled again with 11 seconds remaining. He made the first to tie the game at 67-67 but missed the second. However, Wise grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled with nine seconds left. Wise drained both free throws for a 69-67 Caldwell lead. With time running down, Queens' Khaleef Allicott was fouled before time expired and went to the line with the opportunity to tie the game. But Allicott missed both free throws, clinching the Cougars' first win since a Dec. 5 triumph at Felician College.

The game remained close throughout, with 13 ties and eight lead changes. Queens shot 61.9 percent from the field to take a 40-35 advantage at halftime. Back-to-back three-pointers by senior guard Hans Stelzer (Selden, NY/Our Savior New American) and Wise put Caldwell on top 51-46 with 11 minutes remaining, but Queens came back to tie the game. With the game knotted at 61-61 with 3:39 left, two baskets by junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) gave the Cougars a 65-61 lead at the 2:32 mark. Again the Knights battled back, tying the game with four free throws, then taking a 67-65 advantage with Simmons' free throws with 57 seconds left.

Wise finished with 17 points to match his career high, set in the Cougars' Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference quarterfinal win at Goldey-Beacom last season. Senior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior New American) came off the bench to lead his team with 18 points and six rebounds. Perez, who went 17-of-17 from the line in Wednesday's loss to Bridgeport, did not attempt a free throw while scoring 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor. The Cougars, who as a team made all 25 attempts from the line Wednesday, shot 77.3 percent from the charity stripe compared to 67.9 percent for Queens. Caldwell also enjoyed a 35-26 rebounding advantage, allowing only three offensive rebounds on its defensive glass.

CALDWELL LOSES TO BRIDGEPORT AT DOMINICAN TOURNAMENT

The result gives the Cougars a 2-9 mark on the year, while the Purple Knights improve to 4-5. Junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) made all 17 of his free throw attempts and finished with a game-high 25 points to pace Caldwell.

Five three-pointers by Bridgeport’s Cornell Littlejohn in the first half helped the Purple Knights take a 40-25 halftime lead. The advantage would grow to as many as 23 points in the second half as Bridgeport seemed to be in control of the game. But with the score 80-59 with 4:15 remaining, the Cougars tallied 13 straight points, including eight free throws from Perez and a three by senior guard Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.), to bring Caldwell to within 80-72 with 2:11 left. However, the Cougars made just one basket the rest of the way and Bridgeport hit 8-of-12 from the line down the stretch to hang on for the win.

Perez, who has made 21 consecutive free throws, also grabbed 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. His performance at the line helped Caldwell finish a perfect 25-of-25 at the charity stripe for the game. Wise and sophomore forward Sam Cricelli (Brighton, England/Culham) each scored 11 points in the loss. Littlejohn connected on all six of his shots from three-point range to finish with 24 points for Bridgeport. Teammate Teairez Stennis also scored 24 points, as the Purple Knights shot 55.4 percent from the field compared to 38.3 percent for Caldwell.

The Cougars wrap up play at the Dominican Tournament on Thursday with a game against Queens College. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. in the Hennessy Center.

COUGARS FALL IN OT TO PACE

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team lost a hard-fought non-conference game to Pace University, 83-73 in overtime Saturday night in the final game of the Pace Tournament. The Cougars (2-8) led 69-66 with six seconds left, only to have Pace's Desmond Quincy-Jones tie the game with a three-pointer at the buzzer and send the game to overtime. The Setters (5-6) out-scored Caldwell 14-4 in the extra session to complete the comeback.

Trailing 63-58 with just 3:27 remaining in regulation, the Cougars tied the game with a three-pointer by sophomore forward Sam Cricelli (Brighton, England/Culham) and a basket by senior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior New American) on consecutive possessions. After Pace missed a three-pointer, senior guard Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) scored with 1:22 left to put Caldwell ahead, 65-63. Pace's Laurence McGhee made two free throws to tie the game at 65-65, then Cricelli's basket with 39 seconds on the clock restored the Cougars' lead at 67-65. Following a made free throw by Quincy-Jones and a missed free throw by Wise, McGhee missed the go-ahead basket. Junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) grabbed the rebound and was fouled, making both free throws for a 69-66 lead with just six seconds remaining. Quincy-Jones let fly a three-point shot from the top of the key as time expired, and it found the mark to send the game to overtime.

Pace shot 51.6 percent from the field in the first half to take a 40-32 halftime lead. The lead would grow to 12 in the second half before Caldwell reeled off a 23-7 run to grab a 55-51 advantage with 7:39 remaining. In overtime, Ryan Williams scored six points and Quincy-Jones had four as the Setters never trailed in the extra session.

Perez, pictured, led the Cougars with a season-high 16 points and eight rebounds to earn a spot on the all-tournament team. Wise finished with 13 points and Suchy recorded 11 points, five rebounds and four assists. Williams and Quincy-Jones each tallied 20 points for Pace.

The Cougars participate in their fourth tournament of the season next week at Dominican College on Jan. 2-3. Caldwell plays the University of Bridgeport on Wednesday before facing Queens College on Thursday. Both games start at 6:00 p.m. at the Hennessy Center in Orangeburg, N.Y.

MEN'S BASKETBALL LOSES TO MERRIMACK AT PACE TOURNEY

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team dropped a non-conference game to Merrimack College, 87-59 Friday afternoon at the Pace University Tournament in Pleasantville, N.Y. The defeat is the fifth straight for Caldwell (2-7), while Merrimack improves to 7-2.

A 19-2 Merrimack run midway through the first half broke open a close game and gave the Warriors a 29-12 lead with eight minutes left in the half. After taking a 49-29 advantage at halftime, Merrimack never looked back, building its lead to as many as 34 points in the second half to cruise to victory. The Warriors shot 48.4 percent from the field while taking 10 more free throw attempts than the Cougars, who made just 37.1 percent from the floor and 53.3 percent from the line.

Senior guard Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) and junior guard Carl Augustin (Stony Point, NY/Don Bosco Prep) each scored 11 points to lead Caldwell, with senior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior New American) recording a team-best seven rebounds to go with nine points. Darin Mency scored a game-high 22 points for the Warriors, who also received 14 points and 10 assists from Darren Duncan.

Newman Center Sunday afternoon. The Cougars, who have lost four straight, are now 2-6 on the season, while the Ravens improve to 5-6.

Offensive struggles continued to plague the Cougars, who made just 30.0 percent (15-of-50) from the field in the game. After a three-pointer by sophomore guard John Reed (Wall, NJ/Wall) gave Caldwell a 20-16 lead with 10:19 left in the first half, the Cougars failed to make a field goal for the remainder of the half. The Ravens took advantage, using a 17-2 run to take a 31-22 halftime lead. The Cougars were 0-for-8 from the floor with seven turnovers during the run.

A dunk by junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) on Caldwell's first possession of the second half sparked a 10-3 spree that put the Cougars two points back, 34-32 at the 14:45 mark. But again the scoring touch went cold, as Franklin Pierce scored nine straight points to build a 43-32 lead with 12 minutes to play. Caldwell never got closer than eight points after that, as the Ravens pulled away for their second win of the ECAC/Commerce Bank Classic. Franklin Pierce shot the ball well from the field (50.0 percent) and from three-point range (45.0 percent) for the game.

Senior guard Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.), pictured, led the Cougars with 13 points, while Perez finished with 11 points and four rebounds. Senior guard Hans Stelzer (Selden, NY/Our Savior New American) swiped a career-high six steals to go with four assists in the loss. Ravens' guard Timothy Munch went 5-of-9 from three-point range en route to a game high 22 points to earn Player of the Game honors for the second time this weekend. Forward Terrell Ray added 11 points, while guard Kinard Dozier had nine points and a team-best seven boards in the win.

In the day's other game, Will Carty scored 18 points to lead Dominican College to an 84-72 victory over Southern New Hampshire University. Carty, who was named Player of the Game, helped the Chargers improve to 5-2 on the season. The Penmen (4-6) were led by Sam Carey's 29 points.

The Cougars return to action next weekend at the Pace University Tournament Dec. 28-29. Caldwell faces Merrimack on Friday at 5:00 p.m. before facing the host Setters on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

CALDWELL, N.J. - Senior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior New American) recorded his 1,000th career point as the Caldwell College men's basketball team fell to Southern New Hampshire University, 73-61 in the second game of the ECAC/Commerce Bank Classic Saturday afternoon in the George R. Newman Center. The loss is the Cougars' third in a row and drops their overall record to 2-5, while the Penmen improve to 4-5 on the season.

Suchy eclipsed the 1,000-point mark on a lay-up with just under two minutes left in the game. He becomes the 14th men's basketball player at Caldwell College to total 1,000 points in his career.

The milestone was overshadowed by a solid effort from the Penmen, who shot 66.7 percent from the field in the first half to take a 39-29 advantage into the break. After the Cougars led 19-12 through the first eight minutes, Southern New Hampshire answered with a 19-3 run that resulted in a 31-22 lead at the six minute mark. Sam Carey made all five of his shot attempts in the half en route to 12 points for the Penmen.

A pair of baskets by Suchy and a lay-up from junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) helped the Cougars cut the deficit to 41-35 early in the second half. But a three-pointer by Troy Bowen sparked eight straight points for SNHU, expanding its lead to 49-35. Caldwell was able to pull to within seven points with under two minutes to play, but the Penmen made 5-of-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to wrap up the win. Although the Cougars connected on 65.7 percent of their two-point field goal attempts, they struggled from three-point range, making just 1-of-20 from beyond the arc.

Suchy led the Cougars with 20 points, with Perez adding 15 points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard Eddie Crockett (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) recorded season highs of 12 points and five boards off the bench. Bowen finished with 20 points to earn the Player of the Game award. Carey had 16 points and eight rebounds in support of Bowen.

In the day's first game, Franklin Pierce University (4-6) outlasted Dominican College, 87-84 in overtime. Franklin Pierce's Timothy Munch tallied 21 points and was named the Player of the Game. Teammate Jeff Manchester also scored 21 points, while Dominican's Jonathan Guzman scored 18 points to lead the Chargers (4-2).

The ECAC/Commerce Bank Classic concludes on Sunday with Dominican and Southern New Hampshire playing at 2:00 p.m. and the Cougars facing Franklin Pierce at 4:00 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on the internet via live streaming video at ECACSports.com.

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team dropped a non-conference game to Adelphi University, 56-52 Saturday afternoon at Adelphi's Woodruff Hall. The result gives the Cougars a 2-4 record on the season, while the Panthers improve to 5-3. Senior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior New American) scored a game-high 20 points to lead Caldwell.

Neither team led by more than six points in the first half, as Adelphi took a 24-22 lead at halftime. At the start of the second half, the Cougars used seven straight points from Suchy to spark an 11-2 run for a 33-26 advantage with just under 14 minutes to play. Over the next 10:39, Caldwell would fail to make a field goal as Adelphi gained control of the game. Thirteen consecutive points put the Panthers up 39-33 before the Cougars used five free throws to pull to within one, 39-38 with 7:19 on the clock. But a three-pointer by Richard Byrd started a 14-3 Adelphi run that gave the Panthers a 53-41 lead with just 46 seconds remaining.

The game appeared to be out of reach for Caldwell, but baskets by Suchy, senior guard Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) and junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) sandwiched around two missed free throws and a turnover by Adelphi kept the Cougars' hopes alive. Perez completed a conventional three-point play to make the score 53-48 with 10 second left. After Byrd made two free throws and Wise made one following a technical on the Panthers, Suchy drained a three to cut the deficit to 55-52. An offensive foul called on Alvin Vivican gave Caldwell another chance. Freshman forward Sam Cricelli (Brighton, England/Culham) was able put up a three-pointer with four seconds remaining despite contact from the Adelphi defender, but the shot didn't find its mark.

Suchy's performance gives him 984 career points and moves him into 14th place on Caldwell's all-time scoring list. He made 7-of-14 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line to reach 20 points for the second time this season. Perez recorded 11 points and five rebounds in 20 minutes of action in his first game since the beginning of last season. Perez, who is Caldwell's 12th-leading scorer with 1,036 career points, missed all but two games in 2006-07 due to injury. Cricelli grabbed a team-best 10 boards. Pat Luptowski scored 15 points, while Byrd and Sky Khaleel tallied 11 each for Adelphi.

The Cougars host the ECAC/Commerce Bank Classic on Dec. 22-23, playing Southern New Hampshire on Saturday and Franklin Pierce on Sunday, both at 4:00 p.m. The tournament starts at 2:00 p.m. each day.

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game to visiting Goldey-Beacom College, 73-55 Saturday evening at the George R. Newman Center. The result evens the Cougars' conference record at 1-1 (2-3 overall), while the Lightning improve to 5-1 on the season, including a 1-0 mark in the CACC.

The first half remained close, with the lead changing hands 13 times. A pair of lay-ups by senior guard Adam Sabree (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) in the final two minutes of the half allowed the Cougars to take a 29-28 lead at halftime. After the teams exchanged baskets to open the second half, a three-pointer by Adrian Miles capped a 10-0 Goldey-Beacom run that put the Lightning up 40-31 at the 17-minute mark. Caldwell answered with three-pointers from senior guards Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) and Hans Stelzer (Selden, NY/Our Savior) that helped cut the deficit to three, 42-39, with just under 14 minutes to play.

Over the next 5:22, the Lightning proceeded to score 15 of the next 17 points to take control of the game with a 57-41 lead with 8:32 remaining. Miles had seven points in the run for Goldey-Beacom. The Cougars answered with six straight points to make the score 57-47 with just over seven minutes left, but that's as close as they would get the rest of the way. The Lightning took advantage of a 30-8 advantage in free throw attempts for the game, making 23 (75.0 percent). Goldey-Beacom also forced 21 Caldwell turnovers while committing just 11 miscues of its own.

Senior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior), pictured, was the only Caldwell player to score in double figures with 17 points. Sophomore forward Sam Cricelli (Brighton, England/Culham), who sat out most of the second half due to foul trouble, grabbed a team-best seven rebounds to go with eight points. Miles led all scorers with 27 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the field to pace the Lightning. He also had six steals.

Next up for Caldwell is a non-conference game at Adelphi University on Saturday, Dec. 15. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Garden City, N.Y.

 COUGARS HOLD OFF FELICIAN, 76-70

RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Sophomore forward Sam Cricelli (Brighton, England/Culham) recorded 19 points and seven rebounds as the Caldwell College men's basketball team defeated Felician College, 76-70 in the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game of the season for both teams Wednesday night at Job Gym. The Cougars, who held off a late charge by Felician, even their overall record at 2-2 with the win, while the Golden Falcons drop to 3-4.

Caldwell started the game making its first four shots from the field, including three-pointers from Cricelli and senior guard Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.), to take an early 13-4 lead. Felician answered with a 10-0 run sparked by threes from Jason Romer and Derrell Thomas to pull ahead 14-13. The Golden Falcons led 21-20 with just under eight minutes left in the first half when the Cougars rode a 13-1 spree over the next four minutes to grab a 33-22 advantage. Five points by Thomas helped Felician cut the deficit to seven, 38-31, at halftime.

Buoyed by nine points from James Harper, the Golden Falcons carved into the Caldwell lead during the first eight minutes of the second half to trail by only two points, 50-48 with 11:54 to play. The Cougars maintained the upper hand by shooting well, making 60.0 percent of their attempts from the field in the second half. But the game remained close until Caldwell used an 8-1 run to build its largest lead of the game, 73-61 with 2:17 remaining. Felician refused to surrender, scoring nine of the next 10 points to make the score 74-70 with 17 seconds on the clock. But Wise hit two free throws after being fouled, and the Golden Falcons failed to score on their final two possessions.

The win is the 431st career victory for Caldwell head coach Mark Corino, who is now tied with former N.J.I.T. coach James Catalano for third all-time among New Jersey men's college basketball coaches. Corino, whose career record is 431-276 in his 25th season, is the state's winningest active men's college basketball coach.

The Cougars overcame 23 turnovers by shooting 52.9 percent from the field for the game, compared to 39.3 percent for the Golden Falcons, who swiped 18 steals. Cricelli was 7-of-11 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from three-point range, to pace the cougars in scoring for the second time in four games this season. Senior guard Adam Sabree (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) scored 15 points, Wise finished with 12 and senior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior) had 11 points. Junior guard Carl Augustin (Stony Point, NY/Don Bosco Prep) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go with nine points. Harper led Felician with 21 points, 12 rebounds and six steals, while Devon Young had 17 points.

The Cougars continue CACC play on Saturday, Dec. 8 with a home game against Goldey-Beacom College. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.

CALDWELL FALLS TO FAYETTEVILLE STATE AT ORTHOCAROLINA CLASSIC

The loss drops the Cougars to 1-2 on the season, while the Broncos improve to 1-3.

Fayetteville State shot a sizzling 64.0 percent from the field in the first half, including 5-of-11 from three-point range, to take a 41-35 halftime lead. The Broncos stayed hot early in the second half, making their first three shots to increase their advantage to 49-39 three minutes into the second period. Four points from Suchy and a three-pointer by senior guard Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) ignited an 11-1 Caldwell run that tied the game at 50-50 with 13:14 remaining. Turnovers on the Cougars' next three possessions halted the run and allowed FSU to regain control of the game.

Caldwell closed to within three points, 58-55 after a three from senior guard Hans Stelzer (Selden, NY/Our Savior) at the 9:10 mark. But a three by Phillippe Harris and an Andy Gebru dunk, both following Caldwell turnovers, pushed the Broncos' lead to 63-55 with eight minutes to play. The Cougars would pull to within five points on Suchy's jumper with 4:00 minutes left, but wouldn't score again until only 24 seconds remained on the clock. FSU took advantage of a 14-3 disparity in free throw attempts in the second half.

Suchy carried the Cougars offensively, making 10-of-15 from the floor, including two three-pointers, and 4-of-5 from the line. His 26 points eclipses his previous career best of 24 points, recorded against Holy Family on Feb. 10 last season. Suchy also had a team-best five rebounds. Stelzer finished with six assists and eight points, and senior guard Adam Sabree (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) had nine points and three steals. Gebru and Harris fueled Fayetteville State with 24 and 18 points, respectively.

The Cougars begin Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play on Wednesday, Dec. 5, when they face Felician College on the road. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in Rutherford, N.J.

WINGATE, N.C. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team dropped a tight contest to Wingate University, 69-64 in the OrthoCarolina Classic at Wingate's Cuddy Arena Friday evening. The loss evens the Cougars' record at 1-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs, who were ranked eighth in the NABC Division II Preseason Poll, win their third straight game to improve to 3-2.

After trailing for most of the second half, Caldwell battled back to take a 60-58 lead on a basket by sophomore forward Sam Cricelli (Brighton, England/Culham) with 3:14 remaining. The Bulldogs answered with a lay-up by Bryan Grier and a three-pointer from Brandon Plummer with less than two minutes to play to take a 63-60 advantage. After the teams each made a pair of free throws, Caldwell came up empty on its next possession. Wingate's Ben Davis scored on a lay-up with 33 seconds remaining to effectively put the game out of reach for Caldwell.

The Cougars used three-pointers by sophomore guard Eddie Crockett (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) and senior guard Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) to spark a 10-1 run for an early 19-11 lead at the 9:49 mark of the first half. Another three by senior guard Hans Stelzer (Selden, NY/Our Savior) with 7:36 left in the half gave Caldwell its largest lead of the game, 24-15. But Wingate reeled off a 15-1 run for a 30-24 advantage two minutes before halftime.

The Cougars briefly regained the upper hand by scoring the first six points of the second half, but Rosco Turner's three-pointer put momentum back on the side of the host Bulldogs. From that point, the Cougars tied the game three times and took the lead on Cricelli's basket at the 3:14 mark, but Wingate held on for the win. The Bulldogs made 50 percent (12-of-24) of their field goal attempts in the second half compared to 35.5 percent (11-of-31) for the Cougars.

Wise, pictured, led Caldwell with 15 points, while Cricelli tallied a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds to go with three steals. Senior guard Adam Sabree (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) pitched in 10 points and three steals in the loss. Wingate's all-American guard Sean Barnette led all scorers with 19 points while adding 13 boards and three steals for the Bulldogs, who won the NCAA South Atlantic Region Tournament and advanced to the Division II Elite Eight in 2007. Grier recorded five of Wingate's 10 blocked shots in the game.

The Cougars wrap up play at the OrthoCarolina Classic on Saturday, Dec. 1 with a game against Fayetteville State. CALDWELL, N.J. - Senior guard Hans Stelzer (Selden, NY/Our Savior) dished out a career-high 13 assists to help the Caldwell College men’s basketball team win its season opener over visiting Belmont Abbey College, 97-71 in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at the George R. Newman Center. Stelzer was a catalyst for a Cougar offense that made 58.9 percent of its field goal attempts and 60 percent from three-point range. The loss drops the Crusaders of Belmont, N.C., to 1-4 on the season.

Senior guard Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Township) opened the game with a three-pointer, and the Cougars never looked back, building a 29-9 advantage through 10 minutes of the first half. After Belmont Abbey cut the deficit to 35-23 with 4:53 left in the half, Caldwell closed out the first period with an 18-3 run that started with a three from Wise and ended with another three by sophomore forward Sam Cricelli (Brighton, England/Culham) for a 53-26 halftime bulge. The Cougars made a sizzling 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from beyond the arc in the half, with Wise and Cricelli making all three of their attempts and Stelzer and senior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior) making two apiece.

The Crusaders started hitting from long range in the second half, as four three-pointers by Deonte Murphy pulled Belmont Abbey to within 67-50 with 12:18 to go. But the Cougars scored the next 10 points to lead 77-50 with nine minutes left to put the game out of reach. Caldwell’s depth was too much to overcome for the Crusaders, as five Cougars scored in double figures.

Stelzer found open teammates all game long to surpass his previous career high of nine assists. He also had just two turnovers while scoring six points. Cricelli led his team with 16 points and eight rebounds while making all four of his three-point shots. Senior guard Adam Sabree (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) was 5-of-6 from the floor and finished with 14 points, while Wise and sophomore forward Tyler Emmons (Portland, ME/Portland) both scored 13 points. Suchy tallied 11 points and three assists in the win. Murphy led all scorers with 22 points, with Richard Barbee netting 17 points and five rebounds for the Crusaders.

The win is the 430^th career victory for Caldwell head coach Mark Corino, who is the winningest active men’s college basketball coach in the state of New Jersey. He now ranks fourth all-time among New Jersey men's college hoops coaches in wins.

The Cougars will play two more teams from North Carolina next weekend, when they travel to Wingate, N.C. for the OrthoCarolina Classic, hosted by Wingate University. The tournament begins with a meeting with the eighth-ranked Bulldogs on Friday, Nov. 30 at 8:00 p.m. The Cougars then face Fayetteville State on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

COUGARS PICKED TO WIN NORTH DIVISION IN CACC PRESEASON POLL

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team was selected to finish first in the North Division according to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Preseason Poll released today. The Cougars, who won the CACC Tournament last season and advanced to the NCAA Northeast Region Tournament, received seven first-place votes and 67 points, five more than Post University. Philadelphia University was picked to win the South, collecting 66 points.

Caldwell, coached by Mark Corino, returns 11 of 12 players from last year's squad that finished 19-12 overall, including an 11-9 mark in conference play. Senior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior) averaged 13.9 points per game last season to earn all-CACC third team honors, while sophomore forward Sam Cricelli (Brighton, England/Culham) grabbed a team-best 6.8 rebounds per contest and earned CACC Rookie of the Week accolades four times. Senior guards Adam Sabree (pictured) (Detroit, MI/Renaissance), Hans Stelzer (Selden, NY/Our Savior) and Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Township) also return. With an experienced roster back from last year's title squad, the Cougars have received some attention from national publications. The Division II Bulletin tabbed Caldwell as a team to watch in its NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25 rankings, while The Sporting News included the Cougars in its list of possible breakthrough teams. Caldwell won its sixth CACC title with a 61-60 victory over the University of the Sciences in the finals, then narrowly lost to No. 2 Bentley, 59-56 in the first round of the NCAA Northeast Region Tournament.

This is the first season the conference will have divisional standings, with the top four teams in each division qualifying for the CACC Tournament. The addition of Chestnut Hill College brings the total number of CACC members to 12 for the men and 13 for the women.

The Cougars open the 2007-08 season with a home game against Belmont Abbey College on Saturday, Nov. 24. The tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team was listed as a team to watch in the preseason rankings done by the Division II Bulletin, a monthly newsletter that covers NCAA Division II men's basketball. The Cougars, who won the 2007 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Northeast Regional, were included among the 'Others to Watch' section in the publication's Preseason Top 25 rankings. Additionally, the Division II Bulletin tabbed the Cougars as the top team in the CACC for the upcoming 2007-08 season.

Caldwell, coached by Mark A. Corino, returns 11 of 12 players from last year's squad that finished 19-12 and captured the conference title as the fifth seed in the CACC Tournament. Senior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior), pictured, a third team all-CACC selection last year, is the team's leading returning scorer at 13.6 points per game.
