3-2-10
box score
NYACK, N.Y. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team fell to Nyack College, 81-71 in the quarterfinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Tuesday night at Nyack's Bowman Gymnasium. The loss ends the Cougars' season at 15-12, while the Warriors (19-11) advance to Friday's semifinals, which will be held at Caldwell College.

The Cougars took control of a close game midway through the first half, turning a one-point game into a 28-20 advantage on the strength of four points from junior guard Abena George (Elmont, NY/Elmont Memorial) and a three from junior guard Kirsty Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England/Cheshire Acad.). With Caldwell still on top by eight with five minutes left in the half, the Warriors used three-pointers by Victoria Sweet and Shelly Yount to post a 12-5 run and cut the Cougars' lead to one, 38-37 with a minute remaining. Sophomore guard Stephanie Cadet (Elmont, NY/Elmont Memorial) buried a three near the end of the half to give Caldwell a 41-37 lead at the break. Both teams hit six three-pointers in the half, including three by Leedham.

Another three from Leedham helped the Cougars build their lead to 46-40 early in the second half. Nyack answered with an 8-2 run to tie the game at 48-48 with just under 15 minutes to play. After back-to-back jumpers by freshman guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) put Caldwell on top 52-48, Nyack reeled off a game-changing 14-3 spree that gave the Warriors their biggest lead of the game to that point, 62-55 with 10:27 left. Nyack made six shots in a row during the run, with Sweet and Lekesha Harris hitting threes. Caldwell never came closer than four points the rest of the night, as the Warriors closed out the win making 12-of-17 from the free throw line in the game's final four minutes.

Caldwell shot just 31.4 percent in the second half compared to 44.4 percent for Nyack, which also out-rebounded the Cougars 30-15 after halftime.

Jones scored 17 of her game-high 28 points in the second half, shooting 10-of-21 from the field with four rebounds and three steals for the game. The 28-point performance ties a career high for Jones, who was named the CACC Rookie of the Year earlier in the day. Leedham finished with 16 points, including four three-pointers, and four assists, while freshman center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) grabbed a team-best eight rebounds. Sweet made 4-of-5 from three-point range and 9-of-10 from the charity stripe en route to 25 points and 10 rebounds for Nyack. Yount added 21 points and 13 boards in the win.

The loss marked the final game for seniors Danielle Hubbard (East Orange, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) and Kate Shutz (Edison, NJ/Edison).

CALDWELL CLINCHES PLAYOFF BERTH WIN WIN OVER BLOOMFIELD IN FRONT OF HUGE CROWD

2-27-10
box score
CALDWELL, N.J. - A sellout crowd in the George R. Newman Center, as well as a national television audience, watched the Caldwell College women's basketball team defeat Bloomfield College, 68-61 in the regular-season finale Saturday afternoon. The victory, which was televised live by CBS College Sports Network, allows the Cougars (15-11 overall, 11-8 CACC) to qualify for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament, which begins next week. The Lady Deacons fall to 11-14, 11-7 CACC.

The first half remained close, with four lead changes and three ties. Bloomfield used baskets by Regina Washington and Tiffany McDaniel to build its largest lead of the half, 27-21 with 5:27 left in the first period. Junior guard Kirsty Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England/Cheshire Acad.) scored all of Caldwell's points in an 8-2 run to close out the half. Her three-pointer with 23 seconds left tied the game at 29-29 heading into the break. The Cougars shot just 31.3 percent in the first half compared to 48.1 percent for Bloomfield.

With the game still tied at 34-34 early in the second half, Caldwell scored 10 straight points, including six from Leedham, to take its largest lead of the game, 44-34 with 13:32 on the clock. But Bloomfield reeled off a 12-2 spree to knot the score for the sixth time in the game, 46-46 midway through the second half. The Cougars then broke a 49-49 deadlock with an 11-1 run, sparked by four points apiece from Leedham and freshman guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.), that restored Caldwell's 10-point advantage at the 3:28 mark. The Lady Deacons pulled to within four points with 23 second remaining but would get no closer, as the Cougars defeated Bloomfield for just the third time in the last 16 meetings. The win also ended a five-game losing streak to the rival Lady Deacons.

Caldwell's shooting percentage improved in the second half to 41.7 percent while holding Bloomfield to 30.3 percent after halftime. The Cougars also went 18-of-24 (75.0 percent) from the free throw line in the second half and enjoyed a 32-16 edge in free throw attempts for the game. Caldwell also scored 33 points off 24 Bloomfield turnovers.

Leedham tallied a season-high 33 points while making 14-of-16 from the charity stripe and swiping three steals. Jones finished with 16 points and two steals, while sophomore forward Kaitlyn Lambert (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) had a team-best 10 rebounds and three steals. McDaniel registered 13 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks to lead the Lady Deacons.

The game was played in front of packed bleachers on both sides, with Caldwell fans dressed in white and Bloomfield fans in maroon. The game marked the first time a Caldwell College athletics event was broadcast on national television.

Caldwell's win, coupled with Felician's loss at Holy Family and Dominican's victory at Goldey-Beacom, means the Cougars will play at the top seed in the North Division. Nyack wraps up the CACC North Division with a win over Georgian Court on Sunday. Bloomfield can finish in first with a win at Wilmington and a Nyack loss. The first round of the CACC Tournament is on Tuesday, Mar. 2. Caldwell College will serve as the host of the CACC semifinals and finals on Mar. 5-6.

Caldwell trailed the entire first half, falling behind by as many as 10 points before cutting the deficit to 29-25 by halftime. The Cougars shot just 25.0 percent (9-of-36) from the field in the first half compared to 42.3 percent for Post. A three-pointer by junior guard Kirsty Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England/Cheshire Acad.) to open the second half pulled Caldwell to within one, but the Eagles built their lead back up to five, 35-30 with just under 16 minutes to play. Free throws by Leedham and freshman forward Ebony Thomas (Jersey City, NJ/Marist) were followed by a basket from freshman guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) that gave Caldwell its first lead of the game, 36-35.

The lead changed hands three times, with Post taking a 39-38 lead with 13:10 on the clock. The Cougars answered with 11 straight points punctuated by two threes from Leedham that gave Caldwell a commanding 49-39 lead with nine minutes remaining. Although Post was able to come within three points, the Cougars built the lead back up to seven, 66-59 with just over a minute left. Back-to-back lay-ups and a free throw from Aubrey Latham brought the Eagles within two, 66-64 with 32 seconds on the clock. After junior guard Abena George (Elmont, NY/Elmont Memorial) hit two free throws, Monique Chance made it a one-point game with a conventional three-point play with 11.7 seconds left. Leedham left the door open for Post by making 1-of-2 from the line, giving the Eagles the ball down two with eight seconds left. After Mallorie Michalak's jumper was off the mark, Latham grabbed the rebound but stepped out of bounds with 0.5 seconds remaining. The Cougars inbounded the ball and time expired for their fourth win in five games.

Caldwell ended up shooting 28.4 percent from the field for the game but held a 49-38 advantage on the glass, including 22 offensive rebounds. The Cougars also went to the free throw line 31 times compared to 13 for Post.

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team suffered a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to Wilmington University, 76-73 Saturday night in the George R. Newman Center. The loss ends the Cougars' three-game winning streak and leaves them at 13-11 overall and 9-8 in the conference. The Wildcats improve to 12-12, 9-7 CACC.

Caldwell took the lead from the start and built a 23-7 advantage over the first 7:29, with freshman guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) scoring 12 points. Wilmington battled back, hitting eight threes in the first half to get as close as four, 40-36 with 1:25 left in the half. Jones hit another three-pointer, her fourth of the half, to put Caldwell up 45-38 with 38 seconds on the clock. Ashley Baker answered for Wilmington with two free throws just before halftime to make the score 45-40 Cougars at the break. Shantel Brown made five threes in the first period to help the Wildcats shoot 53.3 percent from long range, while Jones poured in 20 first-half points.

Caldwell's lead grew to 56-50 with just over 15 minutes to play when the Wildcats scored seven straight points to take their first lead of the game, 57-56 with 10:53 remaining. The Cougars regained the upper hand and led by four, 70-66 after Jones' sixth trey of the game at the 3:33 mark. Junior guard Kirsty Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England/Cheshire Acad.) knotted the score at 72-72 with a lay-up at the 1:11 mark. After Monique Stephens made 1-of-2 from the line for a 73-72 Wildcat lead, the Cougars came up empty on their next possession, missing a three and giving up a steal to Baker with six seconds left. Baker hit two more free throws to extend the lead to 75-72, then Leedham was fouled and made 1-of-2 from the charity stripe with three seconds left. But it was too late for Caldwell, who lost for the first time since Feb. 4.

Wilmington took advantage of their 33 trips to the free throw line, making 28 (84.8 percent) compared to 8-of-10 for Caldwell. Their 20 made free throws in the second half made up for an 8-of-21 field goal shooting performance for the Wildcats, who held the Cougars to 10-of-26 from the field (38.5 percent) after halftime. Jones tallied a career-high 28 points, making 11-of-20 from the floor and 6-of-13 from beyond the arc.
