N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team fell to Bloomfield
College, 83-71 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday
afternoon at the George R. Newman Center. The loss dropped the Cougars
to 1-5 on the season and evened their CACC record at 1-1, while the
Deacons remained unbeaten at 5-0 (2-0 CACC).
Bloomfield opened up with a 13-4 run in the game's first four minutes,
then built up an 18-point lead with a 16-3 run to give the Deacons a
33-15 advantage with 6:27 left in the first half. The Cougars would get
to within 11 points on baskets by junior guard Kelvin Reese
(Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) and freshman forward B.J. Suchy
(Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior) and three free throws from junior guard
Mark Kelly (Oakhurst, NJ/Oakhurst). But the Deacons outscored
Caldwell 8-5 to end the half with a 43-29 lead.
This time it was Caldwell that got out to a fast start as the Cougars
were helped by three baskets from senior guard Ron Harris
(Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) to open the half with a 10-3 run and cut
the deficit to 46-39 at the 17:24 mark. Caldwell would get to within six
points three different times in the second half, including 64-58 with
8:49 remaining, but would get no closer. Bloomfield's Andre Dabney
scored all 13 of his points in the second half to help the Deacons
clinch the victory.
Freshman forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor, NJ/Egg Harbor) earned
his first career double-double with a team-high 15 points and 12
rebounds, while Harris finished with 13 points and four assists.
Bloomfield's Javier Salson led all scorers with 20 points, and Allen
Valentine had 10 points and a team-best nine rebounds.
The Cougars return to action on Thursday, Dec. 9, when they host CACC
foe Post University at 8:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
