BLAUVELT, N.Y. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team used strong defense and a game-high 17 points from freshman forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor, NJ/Egg Harbor), pictured, to defeat Dominican College, 61-42 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Thursday night at the Hennessy Center. The win moves the Cougars (5-9 overall) into a three-way tie for third place with a 4-2 conference record, while the Chargers fall to 4-10 overall and 2-4 in the CACC.

The Cougars opened the game by not allowing a field goal for the first 11:30 of the contest en route to a 21-1 lead. Seven different players scored for Caldwell during the run, during which the Chargers missed eight shots from the field and had nine turnovers. A 9-2 run that included four points from Perez and a three-pointer by junior guard Kelvin Reese (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) increased the Cougar lead to 30-6 with 3:17 left in the half. Seven straight Dominican points before halftime made the score 30-13 at the break. Caldwell was 13-of-24 from the field in the first half, compared to 4-of-24 for Dominican.

Although the Chargers fared better shooting the ball in the second half (11-of-30), they were unable to get back into the game, thanks in part to nine points from Perez and eight points from freshman forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior). The Cougars outscored Dominican 31-29 in the second half to clinch their second consecutive victory, marking the first time Caldwell has won back-to-back games this season.

Perez was 7-of-9 from the field in leading his team in scoring for the sixth time this season. Suchy finished with 12 points and a game-high eight boards to register his fifth double-digit scoring game in his last six contests. Senior guard Ron Harris (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) swiped five steals to go with four points and four assists. Forward Andrew Marsh led the Chargers with eight points, all in the second half.

The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Jan. 15, as they host Goldey-Beacom College in a CACC contest at the Newman Center. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
