BIG SECOND HALF KEYS CALDWELL'S 72-59 WIN AT GOLDEY-BEACOM

WILMINGTON, Del. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team outscored Goldey-Beacom College 41-26 in the second half as the Cougars came back to beat the Lightning, 72-59 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at the MBNA America Hall. Caldwell improves to 12-13 overall and 11-6 in the CACC, while Goldey-Beacom falls to 4-21, 3-15.

The game remained close throughout the first half with six ties, while neither team led by more than six points. A lay-up by Nate Lewis with 15 seconds left gave the Lightning a 33-31 lead at the half. Goldey-Beacom scorched the nets at a 65.0 percent clip from the field in the first half, led by nine points from Brian Faustin.

The two teams took turns leading in the second half, as the Lightning held a 43-41 advantage with 11:14 left in the game. Senior guard Ron Harris (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central), pictured, scored six straight points to give Caldwell a 47-43 lead. After Goldey-Beacom cut the lead to 47-45, the Cougars went on a 10-4 run, including eight more points from Harris, to lead 57-49 with 6:28 on the clock. The Lightning never got closer than six points, as the Cougars closed out the game hitting 9-of-10 from the free throw line.

Caldwell made 52.4 percent from the field in the second half, while the Lightning cooled down to to 40.7 percent after halftime. The Cougars also took 18 more free throws than their opponents, hitting 26-of-31 from the charity stripe.

Harris led all scorers with 24 points and added five assists and five steals. He now has 79 steals on the season and is six shy of Caldwell's single season record of 85 that he set last year. Freshman forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor, NJ/Egg Harbor) had 12 points, while freshman forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior) and sophomore guard Jean Georges (Vauxhal, NJ/Spotswood) had 10 each. Faustin finished with 18 points to lead the Lightning.

The Cougars return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 22, when they host USP in a CACC contest. Game-time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
