N.J. - Sophomore guard Nolan Hall (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern
Regional), pictured, scored a team-high 19 points as the Caldwell
College men's basketball team topped Goldey-Beacom College, 78-59 in a
Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at the
George R. Newman Center. The Cougars won their third straight game to
improve to 5-2 in the CACC and 6-9 overall, while the Lightning dropped
to 1-13 on the season and 1-7 conference play.
Freshman forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor, NJ/Egg Harbor) scored
six points in a 10-0 run to open the game, capped by a Perez slam dunk
off of a steal and assist from senior guard Ron Harris (Trenton,
NJ/Trenton Central). The Cougars worked the lead up to 30-16 with 4:17
left in the half, But a three-pointer by guard Ron Reed polished off a
12-4 run to cut the Lightning deficit to 34-28 at the break. Perez and
Hall each had 12 points in the first half, as Caldwell made 12 of their
20 first half attempts from the field.
The Cougars answered Goldey-Beacom's late run in the first half with
a 13-4 run to start the second half. The Lightning came within 10 points
twice, and cut the lead to 54-44 after another three by Reed. But they
would get no closer, as a 7-0 Caldwell run, buoyed by five points from
junior guard Kelvin Reese (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck), gave the Cougars
a 61-44 lead with 6:27 on the clock. The Cougars increased the
lead to as many as 21 points twice in the game's final two minutes en
route to their third straight victory in conference play.
Caldwell recorded season-highs of 58.7 percent from the field and 77.8
percent from the line. Hall went 5-of-6 from the floor and 8-of-12 from
the charity stripe, while Perez was 9-of-13 from the field en route to
18 points in the victory. Reese notched a career high of 10 points with
three steals, and Harris paced the Cougars with seven rebounds, six
assists and four steals to go with nine points. Reed finished with 19
points, and center Brian Faustin added 14 points and eight boards.
Caldwell returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 18, when they travel to
Philadelphia, Pa., to face the University of Sciences. Game time is
scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
