PHILADELPHIA,
Pa. - Senior guard Ron Harris (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central),
pictured, poured in a career-high 38 points, but the Caldwell College
men's basketball team lost to Holy Family, 98-95 in a Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference game Thursday night at the Campus Center. The loss
snapped the Cougars' four-game winning streak and vaulted the Tigers into first place of the CACC. Caldwell, which entered the game tied with
the Tigers for the top spot in the conference, fell to 6-3 in league
play and 7-10 overall, while Holy Family improved to 7-2 and 9-6.
The Tigers led for most of the first half and held a 32-16 lead at the
6:18 mark. But the Cougars, led by eight points from Harris and six from
freshman forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor, NJ/Egg Harbor), cut the
lead to 40-38. A three-pointer by Chris Kozole in the final seconds of
the half sent the Tigers into the break with a 43-38 lead.
After Caldwell used a 9-1 run capped by a lay-up from sophomore guard Nolan
Hall (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) to take a 49-48 lead with
17:26 to go, the Tigers built a 10-point lead over the next six minutes.
Another three from Kozole put Holy Family up 75-64 with 7:08 left in the
game. But 10 points by Harris spearheaded a 15-5 Cougar run that brought
the Cougars to within one, 80-79 with 4:32 remaining.
Holy Family refused to surrender the lead, and after a three by Andrew
Pressner and a pair of free throws from Kozole, the Tigers led 93-86
with just 49 seconds on the clock. Baskets by Perez and Harris
sandwiched around a Ryan Haigh free throw made it 94-90, then a pair of
misses at the line by Haigh allowed Harris to nail a three-pointer to
make it a one-point game with 25 seconds left. After Kozole and
Harris took turns hitting two free throws each, Kozole made two more
from the line after being fouled by Perez to put the Tigers up by three
with just eight seconds left. On the last possession of the game, a
three-point attempt by freshman Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middletownship)
was blocked by Haigh, ending the Cougars' comeback.
The Tigers scorched the nets at a 69.7 percent clip from the field,
including 9-of-11 from beyond the arc. The Cougars made a season-high
78.4 percent from the line (29-of-37) while out-rebounding Holy Family
34-28. Harris made 5-of-8 from three-point range and 13-of-14 from the
charity stripe while swiping six steals. Perez finished with 20 points
and six boards, and Hall had 15 points and six rebounds, all on the
offensive glass. Kozole recorded 26 points and 11 assists to lead the
Tigers, while Pressner finished with 25 and Haigh had 23.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Jan. 22, when they host
Wilmington College in a CACC contest in the Newman Center. Tip-off is
scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
