NEWARK,
N.J. - N.J.I.T. used a late second-half surge to defeat Caldwell
College, 62-55 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's
basketball game Tuesday night at the Fleisher Athletic Center. The loss
dropped the Cougars into fourth place in the CACC with a 10-6 record
(11-13 overall), while the Highlanders improved to 11-13 overall and
10-7 in conference play.
The game remained close throughout, with Caldwell taking a 30-28 lead at
the half. N.J.I.T. took over the lead for good when Clayton Barker
scored all six of his points on three straight lay-ups to turn a
one-point deficit into a 56-51 lead with 4:52 left in the game. Poor
shooting plagued the Cougars in the second half, as Caldwell made just
31.3 percent from the field, compared to 47.6 percent for the
Highlanders. Fifty-eight fouls were called in the game, with four
players, including three of N.J.I.T.'s starters, fouling out.
Sophomore guard Jean Georges (Vauxhal, NJ/Spotswood), pictured,
scored a game-high 15 points and added three steals, while senior guard Ron
Harris (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) led Caldwell with five rebounds
and four steals to go with nine points. Harris' four steals moves him
into fourth place on Caldwell's all-time list with 159 career thefts,
one ahead of former Cougar standout Robert Hairs. James Hurt and
Courcy Magnus each scored 13 points to lead the Highlanders.
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 19, when they play at
Goldey-Beacom College in a CACC game. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
