CALDWELL,
N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team dropped a
non-conference game to St. Anselm College, 69-47 Monday night at the
George R. Newman Center. The Cougars are now 2-8 on the season, while
the Hawks, ranked 22nd in the latest NABC Division II national poll,
improve to 7-1.
A pair of lay-ups from freshman forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma,
NY/Our Savior) and a three-pointer by sophomore guard Nolan Hall
(Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) (pictured) helped the Cougars get out
to a 9-5 lead in the game's first three minutes. But the Hawks would tie
it and eventually take the lead just two minutes later on a basket by
forward Darlington Okerulu, and would never trail again. The St. Anselm
advantage grew to as many as 12 points until Suchy hit two more lay-ups
to make the score 32-24 at the half.
Cold shooting hampered the Cougars at the start of the second half, as
they made just three baskets in the first nine minutes of the half. The
Hawks took advantage and jumped out to an 18-point lead, 50-32 with
10:35 left in the game. A three-pointer by sophomore guard Jean
Georges (Vauxhal, NJ/Spotswood) and a lay-up from junior forward
Teren Scudder (Paterson, NJ/Paterson Catholic) cut the lead to 15,
but Caldwell never got any closer. St. Anselm put the game away with a
10-0 run that gave the Hawks a 62-37 lead with 6:23 remaining.
Suchy scored 10 of his team-high 12 points in the first half while
shooting 5-of-6 from the field. Hall recorded 10 points and a team-best
eight boards as the Cougars held a 33-29 advantage on the glass. Hawks'
guard Jim Holsworth led all scorers with 15 points, and guard Matt
Cahill finished with 13 points.
The Cougars return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 22, when they travel to
Oakdale, N.Y., to take on Dowling College at 6:00 p.m.
