EASTON,
Mass. - The Caldwell college men's basketball team fell to Stonehill
College, 77-60 Thursday night in a non-conference game at Merkert
Gymnasium. The loss dropped the Cougars to 3-9 on the season, while the
Chieftains, who beat the Cougars in the season opener at the Newman
Center on Nov. 15, improved to 7-3.
After spotting the Chieftains a 5-0 lead early in the contest, Caldwell
went on a 9-2 run, capped by a three-pointer by junior guard Mark
Kelly (Oakhurst, NJ/Oakhurst), to give the Cougars their only lead
of the game at 9-7. The game remained close through most of the first half, as the Cougars trailed 22-19 with 8:23 to go in the first half
after a lay-up by freshman forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our
Savior) (pictured). But Stonehill closed out the half with a 17-8 run, including
six points from center Evan Pellerin, to take a 39-27 advantage into the
break.
Lay-ups by Suchy and freshman guard Adam Sabree (Detroit,
MI/Renaissance) at the start of the second half helped cut the lead to
11 with 17:28 to go. But the Chieftains built an insurmountable lead
with a 29-8 run that saw the Cougars make just three field goals, while
Stonehill went 11-of-14 from the line. Down 73-41 with 6:18 remaining,
the Cougars finished the game with a 19-4 run, including seven points
from freshman forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor, NJ/Egg
Harbor).
Suchy led the Cougars with 14 points and seven rebounds for his fourth
straight game scoring in double figures. Perez had 13 points, and Kelly
finished with 12 points while making three of his five attempts from
three-point range. Sophomore guard Nolan Hall (Manahawkin,
NJ/Southern Regional) had a career-high five assists. Pellerin, who went
11-of-11 from the field in the first meeting between the two teams,
recorded game-highs with 18 points and 11 rebounds for his fourth
double-double of the season.
Caldwell has almost two weeks off before resuming its schedule with a
Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match-up with N.J.I.T. on
Tuesday, Jan. 11. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. at the Newman Center.
