CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team
opened the 2004-05 season with a loss to Stonehill College, 87-62 in a
non-conference game Monday evening at the George R. Newman Center.
Stonehill (1-0) was carried by the perfect shooting of senior Evan
Pellerin, who was 11-of-11 from the field en route to a game-high 25
points.
The Chieftains used a 13-2 run midway through the first half to break
open a close game and take the lead for good at the 13:25 mark. After a
pair of free throws by Caldwell sophomore guard Jean Georges (Vauxhaul,
NJ/Spotswood) cut the Stonehill lead to 32-21 with 5:56 to play in the
first half, the Chieftains closed out the half with a 14-2 run,
including seven points from Sean Nelson, as Stonehill went into halftime
with a 46-23 advantage.
The lead would climb to as high as 31 at the 16:55 mark of the second
half after three straight lay-ups by Pellerin. Three three-point field
goals by junior guard Mark Kelly (Oakhurst, NJ/Oakhurst)
(pictured) helped
Caldwell cut the lead to 20 three different times during the second
half, but they would get no closer as Stonehill cruised to victory.
Kelly finished with 13 points while making all three of his three-point
field goal attempts. Freshman forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor,
NJ/Egg Harbor) finished with 10 points and tied junior forward Teren
Scudder (Paterson, NJ/Paterson Catholic) for the team high with six
rebounds in his first collegiate game. Nelson had 20 points and seven
rebounds, while Dezmond Morgan struck for 17 points for Stonehill.
The Cougars are back in action this weekend when they travel to
Anchorage, Alaska, for the AT&T Alascom Jamboree Nov. 18-20. Caldwell
faces host Alaska-Anchorage on Thursday at 11:00 p.m. Eastern.
